Life Expectancy Increased in Most States in 2022

The National Center for Health Statistics recently released its report titled “U.S. State Life Tables, 2022,” providing life expectancy data across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. A data visualization map is also available, allowing for an easy exploration of these findings.
Top States for Life Expectancy at Birth in 2022
- Hawaii: 80.0 years
- Massachusetts: 79.8 years
- New Jersey: 79.6 years
- New York: 79.5 years
- Connecticut: 79.4 years
States with the Lowest Life Expectancy
- Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana: 73.8 years
- Kentucky: 73.6 years
- Mississippi: 72.6 years
- West Virginia: 72.2 years
Findings
- Women generally live longer than men in every state. The gap varies, with women living 3.6 years longer than men in Utah and 6.9 years longer in New Mexico.
- Life expectancy increased in 48 states and D.C. from 2021 to 2022, with an overall rise of 1.1 years.
- When looking at life expectancy for those who reach age 65, Hawaii again comes out on top with 20.5 additional years. In contrast, West Virginia has the lowest at 16.6 years.
