NCHS Provisional Report on U.S. Mortality for 2024

NCHS has just released a new report titled “Mortality in the United States: Provisional Data, 2024.” This report offers an early snapshot of death rates across the country, breaking down the data by age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin. It also highlights the leading causes of death in the United States.

According to the report, the top three causes of death in 2024 are heart disease, which accounted for 683,037 deaths, followed by cancer with 619,812 deaths, and unintentional injury, which resulted in 196,488 deaths.

A noteworthy change in this year’s report is that suicide has now taken the place of COVID-19 as the 10th leading cause of death.
