One way <\/span>CDC<\/span> protects the nation\u2019s health is through guidelines for healthcare settings that <\/span>protect patients<\/span>, providers<\/span>, <\/span>visitors,<\/span> and staff from infection. <\/span>These guidelines are developed through an extensive process of scientific review and stakeholder engagement. This year, one of CDC\u2019s advisory committees,<\/span> the <\/span>Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC),<\/a> is reviewing and updating the 2007 Isolation Precautions guideline<\/a> that helps keep healthcare workers and their patients safe from infections.<\/p>\n The guideline update process includes:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 1. Why does the guideline need to change? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The goal of the revision is to provide the 23+ million healthcare workers in the Unites States with guidelines that are <\/span>effectiv<\/span>e<\/span>, up to date<\/span>,<\/span> practical in use<\/span>,<\/span> and safe and understandable. <\/span>The guideline is 16 years old and 206 pages long, making it difficult for healthcare workers to apply quickly and making it susceptible to being misinterpreted. <\/span>Some of the <\/span>information is also out of <\/span>date. <\/span>HICPAC members and <\/span>its<\/span> workgroups have every patient<\/span>, visitor,<\/span> and healthcare worker in mind during <\/span>these <\/span>updates. This includes <\/span>visitors,<\/span> environmental<\/span> services staff, respiratory therapists, administrative staff, nurses, and all others whose efforts help patients and residents receive the safe care they <\/span>need.<\/p>\n 2. Who will develop the new guideline?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n HICPAC workgroups, convened by the committee in accordance with the Federal Advisory Committee Act, develop options for the full committee to discuss during public meetings. The full committee is charged with voting to send a guideline for consideration to CDC to present it for public comment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n M<\/span>embers and workgroups are made up of external (non-CDC) experts in fields including patient safety, occupational health, healthcare epidemiology infection prevention and control, and frontline patient care. In addition, members of the public are invited and encouraged to participate in the process through the public comment period<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n 3. What changes do you expect?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The\u00a0workgroup responsible for the first section has provided updates on their work at public HICPAC meetings since February 2022. So far, they have indicated that they are working to:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 4. Will the new first section make new recommendations for respiratory viruses?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The revised <\/span>first section <\/span>will <\/span>not include any recommendations for the types of precautions that should be used for specific pathogens.\u202fPathogen-specific recommendations <\/span>in the second section<\/span> will be reviewed and updated <\/span>starting<\/span> in 2024<\/span>, to<\/span> inform the actions healthcare personnel should take<\/span>, <\/span>for example, <\/span>for a patient with <\/span>Ebola versus a patient with shingles<\/span>.<\/p>\n 5. When will the first section be available for public comment?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The first draft of the new first section <\/span>will be <\/span>present<\/span>ed<\/span> to HICPAC for a review and vote<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> public meeting <\/span>November <\/span>2<\/span>-3<\/span>, <\/span>2023<\/span>.<\/span> This first draft<\/span> and the meeting slides<\/span> will be shared <\/span>on <\/span>the<\/span> HICPAC website<\/a> under <\/span>the <\/span>Upcoming Meetings <\/span>tab<\/span>.<\/span> Following the meeting, the full meeting recording and the meeting minutes will be posted <\/span>on <\/span>the HICPAC website<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n If <\/span>HICPAC <\/span>vote<\/span>s<\/span> to approve <\/span>the draft for CDC review<\/span>, the first section will then be submitted to CDC <\/span>where it will be reviewed <\/span>as part of the clearance process, which includes<\/span> program staff and <\/span>Center <\/span>leadership<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>If the draft is approved by CDC for posting for public comment, the draft will be posted to the Federal Register for 60 days for public review and comment<\/span> (likely<\/span> during November 2023-January 2024<\/span>)<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n 6. Will my comment be considered?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n It is essential that <\/span>individuals and organizations<\/span> that have<\/span> a comment review a copy of the draft <\/span>in the Federal Register <\/span>and make formal comments through that process. <\/span>HICPAC reviews each comment made through the formal comment process. Comments are categorized by topic and <\/span>will be <\/span>presented along with suggested modifications in <\/span>the<\/span> public <\/span>February 29 <\/span>meeting<\/span> in 2024<\/span>. <\/span>Public comments undergo a thorough review to determine where additional modifications and clarifications might be needed in the draft<\/span>.<\/p>\n 7. When will the first section be final?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The timing of the final <\/span>guideline<\/span> will depend on the public comment process and how long it takes to <\/span>incorporate changes. When will the second section be final?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Once\u00a0the first section is complete, HICPAC will shift to the new second section: pathogen-specific recommendations. HICPAC and CDC will then review the makeup of the workgroups and solicit participation to ensure that the appropriate expertise is included for work needed on this next section.
