Based on data produced by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/series\/sr_23\/sr23_022.pdf\">National Survey of Family Growth<\/a>, 43% of first marriages by women aged 15-44 will end in a &#8220;disruption&#8221; within 15 years. Disruption is defined as either separation or divorce. As not all separations end in divorce (see Table 33 at the link)\u00a0is would seem that the 50% figure is an overstatement.<\/p>\n<p>The inestimable Cecil Adams of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.straightdope.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Straight Dope <\/a>takes a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.straightdope.com\/columns\/030124.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">look at this &#8220;fact&#8221;<\/a> and its probable genesis.
