{"id":2442,"date":"2014-09-24T10:26:32","date_gmt":"2014-09-24T13:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nchstats.com\/?p=2442"},"modified":"2014-09-24T10:26:32","modified_gmt":"2014-09-24T13:26:32","slug":"international-comparisons-of-infant-mortality-and-related-factors-united-states-and-europe-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/2014\/09\/24\/2442\/","title":{"rendered":"International Comparisons of Infant Mortality and Related Factors: United States and Europe, 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\">A new NCHS\u00a0<a title=\"International Comparisons of Infant Mortality and Related Factors: United States and Europe, 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr63\/nvsr63_05.pdf\">report<\/a> investigates the reasons for the United States\u2019 high infant mortality rate when compared with European <\/span><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\">countries.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\">Specifically, the <a title=\"International Comparisons of Infant Mortality and Related Factors: United States and Europe, 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr63\/nvsr63_05.pdf\">report <\/a>measures the impact on infant <\/span><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\">mortality differences of two major factors: the percentage of preterm <\/span><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\">births and gestational age-specific infant mortality rates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, the U.S. infant mortality rate was 6.1 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, and the United States ranked 26th in infant mortality among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. After excluding births at less than 24 weeks of gestation to ensure international comparability, the U.S. infant mortality rate was 4.2, still higher than for most European countries and about twice the rates for Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. U.S. infant mortality rates for very preterm infants (24\u201331 weeks of gestation) compared favorably with most European rates. However, the U.S. mortality rate for infants at 32\u201336 weeks was second-highest, and the rate for infants at 37 weeks of gestation or more was highest, among the countries studied.<\/p>\n<p>About 39% of the United States\u2019 higher infant mortality rate when compared with that of Sweden was due to a higher percentage of preterm births, while 47% was due to a higher infant mortality rate at 37 weeks of gestation or more.
