Individuals are encouraged to \u201ceat a variety of vegetables, especially dark-green and red and orange vegetables.\u201d Fruits and vegetables are sources of many under-consumed nutrients and consuming fruits and vegetables is associated with a decreased risk of chronic disease.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nccdphp\/dnpa\/nutrition\/images\/spotlight_fruit_veg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"159\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A new NCHS <a title=\"Fruit and Vegetable Consumption of U.S. Youth, 2009\u20132010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db156.pdf\">report<\/a> examines the percentage of youth aged 2\u201319 years who consumed fruits and vegetables on a given day in 2009\u20132010, using data from one 24-hour dietary recall interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Findings from the Report<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than three-quarters of youth aged 2\u201319 years (77.1%) consumed fruit on a given day.<\/li>\n<li>Almost 92% of youth aged 2\u201319 years consumed vegetables on a given day.<\/li>\n<li>Nine out of 10 children aged 2\u20135 years consumed fruit, while only 6 out of 10 adolescents consumed fruit on a given day.<\/li>\n<li>More children aged 2\u20135 years than adolescents consumed vegetables on a given day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), 2010 encourage Americans, including youth, to increase their consumption of fruits and vegetables.
