{"id":227,"date":"2012-08-05T20:14:23","date_gmt":"2012-08-05T20:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/inside-nchs\/?p=227"},"modified":"2022-10-31T20:31:13","modified_gmt":"2022-10-31T20:31:13","slug":"national-leaders-in-health-research-to-address-national-conference-on-health-statistics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/2012\/08\/05\/227\/","title":{"rendered":"National Leaders in Health Research to Address National Conference on Health Statistics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three nationally recognized leaders in the fields of health care research, statistics, and policy will deliver keynote addresses to the 2012 National Conference on Health Statistics, held August 6-8, at the Renaissance Hotel in Washington, D.C.\u00a0 The Conference is a biennial event produced by NCHS.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/inside-nchs\/files\/2015\/08\/speaker_luft1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-228 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/08\/speaker_luft1.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Harold Luft\" width=\"150\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harold Luft, of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute, will address Tuesday morning\u2019s plenary session.\u00a0 Dr. Luft, a senior investigator who previously served as the Institute\u2019s Director, is also the Caldwell B. Esselstyn Professor Emeritus of Health Policy and Health Economics at the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco.\u00a0 His most recent book, \u201cTotal Cure: The Antidote to the Health Care Crisis,\u201d was published in 2008 by Harvard University Press.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/inside-nchs\/files\/2015\/08\/speaker_simpson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/08\/speaker_simpson.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Lisa A. Simpson\" width=\"156\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Lisa A. Simpson and Dr. Mohammad N. Akhter will address the Wednesday morning plenary session.\u00a0 Dr. Simpson is president and CEO of AcademyHealth.\u00a0 Her research focuses on improving the performance of the health care system, and includes studies of the quality and safety of care, the role of health information technology in improving the quality of care, health and health care disparities, and the health policy and system response to childhood obesity.\u00a0 She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2010 Public Policy and Advocacy award from the Academic Pediatrics Association.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/inside-nchs\/files\/2015\/08\/speaker_akhter1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-230 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/36\/2015\/08\/speaker_akhter1.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Akhter \" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Akhter is Director of the D.C. Department of Health and former Executive Director of the American Public Health Association.\u00a0 His top priorities at the Department include implementation of health care reform, expansion of HIV services and making them available on demand, supporting training programs for D.C. residents to qualify for jobs in health care, and improving access to quality care across the District.\u00a0 Dr. Akhter is the recipient of the 2007 Sedwick Memorial Medal for Distinguished Service in Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very fortunate to have Drs.
