{"id":2219,"date":"2014-05-07T10:36:02","date_gmt":"2014-05-07T13:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nchstats.com\/?p=2219"},"modified":"2014-05-07T10:36:02","modified_gmt":"2014-05-07T13:36:02","slug":"asthma-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/2014\/05\/07\/2219\/","title":{"rendered":"Asthma Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/asthma\/images\/boy_and_inhaler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/asthma\/images\/boy_and_inhaler.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration of person using asthma inhaler.\" width=\"220\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a>May is <a title=\"May is Asthma Awareness Month\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/Features\/AsthmaAwareness\/\">Asthma Awareness Month<\/a> and it&#8217;s important to recognize one of the most common lifelong chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"CDC - Asthma\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ASTHMA\/\">Asthma<\/a> is a common chronic airway disorder characterized by periods of reversible airflow obstruction known as asthma attacks.\u00a0 Airflow is obstructed by inflammation and airway hyperreactivity (contraction of the small muscles surrounding the airways) in reaction to certain exposures.\u00a0 Exposures include exercise, infection, allergens (e.g., pollen), occupational exposures (e.g., chemicals), and airborne irritants (e.g., environmental tobacco smoke).<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms may include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It is not clear how to prevent asthma from developing and there is no cure. Yet the means to control and prevent exacerbations in persons who have asthma are well established in evidence-based clinical guidelines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr61\/nvsr61_04.pdf\">3,404<\/a> people died of asthma in 2010, according to the most recent national data.<\/p>\n<p>In 2010, <a title=\"Number of discharges with asthma as first-listed diagnosis\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nhds\/2average\/2010ave2_firstlist.pdf\">439,000<\/a> people were discharged from the hospital with asthma as first-listed diagnosis and the average length of stay was over 3 days.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Trends in Asthma Prevalence, Health Care Use, and Mortality in the United States, 2001\u20132010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db94.pdf\">Asthma prevalence<\/a> (the percentage of people who have ever been diagnosed with asthma and still have asthma) increased from 7.3% in 2001 to 8.4% in 2010.\u00a0 Also, an estimated 25.7 million people had asthma: 18.7 million adults and 7 million children and adolescents.<\/p>\n<p>Children and adolescents had higher asthma prevalence (9.5%) than adults (7.7%) for the period 2008\u20132010.
