{"id":1562,"date":"2013-05-30T08:37:39","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T11:37:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nchspressroom.wordpress.com\/?p=1562"},"modified":"2013-05-30T08:37:39","modified_gmt":"2013-05-30T11:37:39","slug":"health-united-states-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdc.gov\/nchs\/2013\/05\/30\/1562\/","title":{"rendered":"Health, United States, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\"><span style=\"color:#221e1f;font-size:small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hus\/hus12.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1565\" alt=\"Health, United States:2012 Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/nchspressroom.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/05\/hus12-cover.jpg?w=231\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>On May 30, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)\u00a0published its annual report on the\u00a0nation&#8217;s health. \u00a0<a title=\"Health, United States, 2012\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hus\/hus12.pdf\"><i>Health, United States, 2012<\/i><\/a>\u2014 which includes a Special Feature on Emergency Care\u2014is the 36th report on the health status of the nation and is submitted each year by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to the President and the Congress of the United States in compliance with Section 308 of the Public Health Service Act.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">Highlights of this year\u2019s special section on emergency care include:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">During 2001 through 2011, both children under age 18 and adults aged 18\u201364 with Medicaid coverage were more likely than uninsured Americans and those with private insurance coverage to have at least one emergency room visit in the past year.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">In 2009\u20132010, cold symptoms were the most common reason for emergency room visits by children (27 percent), and injuries were the most common reason for visits by adults (14 percent.)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">Between 2000 and 2010, 35 percent of emergency room visits included an x-ray, while the use of advanced imaging scans (CT or MRI) increased from 5 percent to 17 percent of visits.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">In 2009\u20132010, 81 percent of emergency department visits were discharged for follow-up care as needed, 16 percent ended with the patient being admitted to the hospital, 2 percent ended with the patient leaving without completing the visit, and less than 1 percent ended in the patient\u2019s death.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">In 2009\u20132010, 59 percent of emergency department visits (excluding hospital admissions) included at least one drug prescribed at discharge.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">During 2001-2011, the percentage of persons with at least one em<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">ergency department visit in the past year was stable at 20 percent to 22 percent, and the percentage of persons reporting two or more visits was stable at 7 percent to 8 percent.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman;font-size:medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\"><strong>Other highlights from the report include<\/strong>:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">Between 2010 and 2011, the percentage of adults aged 19-25 who were uninsured decreased from 34 percent to 28 percent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"font-size:medium\"><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman\">Expenditures for hospital care accounted for 31 percent of all national health care expenditures in 2010.
