Kidney stones (<a title=\"Hospitalizations for first-listed diagnoses, 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nhds\/10Detaileddiagnosesprocedures\/2010det10_numberfirstdiagnoses.pdf\">ICD-9-CM Code 592<\/a>) brought 158,000 to the hospital. Kidney disease (nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis) was the <a title=\"Leading Causes of Death, 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/dvs\/LCWK9_2010.pdf\">eighth leading cause of death<\/a> in the United States in 2010, with <a title=\"Deaths from kidney disease for 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/states\/KIDNEY_DISEASE_STATE_2010.pdf\">50,476 deaths<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cancer (malignant neoplasms) was the <a title=\"Leading Causes of Death, 2010\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/dvs\/LCWK9_2010.pdf\">second leading cause of death<\/a> in 2010, and there were <a title=\"Hospitalizations for colorectal cancer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nhds\/3firstlisted\/2010first3_numberage.pdf\">136,000 hospitalizations<\/a> for colorectal cancer that year according to the last <a title=\"National Hospital Discharge Survey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhds.htm\">National Hospital Discharge Survey<\/a>. Patients who had this cancer, but were hospitalized for another reason, are not included in this number. So the number could even be higher.<\/p>\n<p>Since colonoscopies are performed as both outpatient and inpatient procedures, National Center for Health Statistics data on this colorectal cancer screening procedure is gleaned from a number of different surveys. In a hospital setting, colonoscopies were performed 444,000 times according to the 2010 <a title=\"National Hospital Discharge Survey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhds.htm\">National Hospital Discharge Survey<\/a>. According to the National Health Interview Survey, <a title=\"Use of colorectal tests or procedures among adults 50-75 years of age\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/hus\/2011\/092.pdf\">54.9 percent<\/a> of adults, 50 to 75 years old, had colonoscopies in 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March is National Kidney Month AND National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
