Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse

Posted on by Ali S. Khan

Banner - Zombie Apocalypse

Walking Dead fans, check out our latest post: http://go.usa.gov/Q4J

There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.

A Brief History of Zombies
We’ve all seen at least one movie about flesh-eating zombies taking over (my personal favorite is Resident Evil), but where do zombies come from and why do they love eating brains so much? The word zombie comes from Haitian and New Orleans voodoo origins. Although its meaning has changed slightly over the years, it refers to a human corpse mysteriously reanimated to serve the undead. Through ancient voodoo and folk-lore traditions, shows like the Walking Dead were born.

A couple dressed as zombies - Danny Zucco and Sandy Olsson from the movie Grease walking in the annual Toronto Zombie Walk.

In movies, shows, and literature, zombies are often depicted as being created by an infectious virus, which is passed on via bites and contact with bodily fluids. Harvard psychiatrist Steven Schlozman wrote a (fictional) medical paper on the zombies presented in Night of the Living Dead and refers to the condition as Ataxic Neurodegenerative Satiety Deficiency Syndrome caused by an infectious agent. The Zombie Survival Guide identifies the cause of zombies as a virus called solanum. Other zombie origins shown in films include radiation from a destroyed NASA Venus probe (as in Night of the Living Dead), as well as mutations of existing conditions such as prions, mad-cow disease, measles and rabies.

The rise of zombies in pop culture has given credence to the idea that a zombie apocalypse could happen. In such a scenario zombies would take over entire countries, roaming city streets eating anything living that got in their way. The proliferation of this idea has led many people to wonder “How do I prepare for a zombie apocalypse?”

Well, we’re here to answer that question for you, and hopefully share a few tips about preparing for real emergencies too!

Disaster or Blackout Emergency Supplies
Some of the supplies for your emergency kit

Better Safe than Sorry

So what do you need to do before zombies…or hurricanes or pandemics for example, actually happen? First of all, you should have an emergency kit in your house. This includes things like water, food, and other supplies to get you through the first couple of days before you can locate a zombie-free refugee camp (or in the event of a natural disaster, it will buy you some time until you are able to make your way to an evacuation shelter or utility lines are restored). Below are a few items you should include in your kit, for a full list visit the CDC Emergency page.

  • Water (1 gallon per person per day)
  • Food (stock up on non-perishable items that you eat regularly)
  • Medications (this includes prescription and non-prescription meds)
  • Tools and Supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery powered radio, etc.)
  • Sanitation and Hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)
  • Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)
  • Important documents (copies of your driver’s license, passport, and birth certificate to name a few)
  • First Aid supplies (although you’re a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane)

Once you’ve made your emergency kit, you should sit down with your family and come up with an emergency plan. This includes where you would go and who you would call if zombies started appearing outside your door step. You can also implement this plan if there is a flood, earthquake, or other emergency.

Picture of Family by mailbox
Family members meeting by their mailbox. You should pick two meeting places, one close to your home and farther away
  1. Identify the types of emergencies that are possible in your area. Besides a zombie apocalypse, this may include floods, tornadoes, or earthquakes. If you are unsure contact your local Red Cross chapter for more information.
  2. Pick a meeting place for your family to regroup in case zombies invade your home…or your town evacuates because of a hurricane. Pick one place right outside your home for sudden emergencies and one place outside of your neighborhood in case you are unable to return home right away.
  3. Identify your emergency contacts. Make a list of local contacts like the police, fire department, and your local zombie response team. Also identify an out-of-state contact that you can call during an emergency to let the rest of your family know you are ok.
  4. Plan your evacuation route. When zombies are hungry they won’t stop until they get food (i.e., brains), which means you need to get out of town fast! Plan where you would go and multiple routes you would take ahead of time so that the flesh eaters don’t have a chance! This is also helpful when natural disasters strike and you have to take shelter fast.

Never Fear – CDC is Ready

Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Prepared
Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Be Prepared

If zombies did start roaming the streets, CDC would conduct an investigation much like any other disease outbreak. CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation. This assistance might include consultation, lab testing and analysis, patient management and care, tracking of contacts, and infection control (including isolation and quarantine). It’s likely that an investigation of this scenario would seek to accomplish several goals: determine the cause of the illness, the source of the infection/virus/toxin, learn how it is transmitted and how readily it is spread, how to break the cycle of transmission and thus prevent further cases, and how patients can best be treated. Not only would scientists be working to identify the cause and cure of the zombie outbreak, but CDC and other federal agencies would send medical teams and first responders to help those in affected areas (I will be volunteering the young nameless disease detectives for the field work).

I might suggest adding a baseball bat, preferably aluminum, to your emergency kit as well. It doesn’t require ammunition and can be highly effective at clearing a path through hordes of zombies whilst trying to make good your escape.

I love this post! My friends and I were discussing the zombie apocalypse after watching Zombieland. The discussion revolved around what would we do and how would we do it. It then dawned on us that what we were discussing would be extremely practical in real-world scenarios as well. That’s when we began our journey into the world of prepping. I hope your article sparks many more discussions in many more homes across the country! Thanks!

This is the stuff we preach on a daily basis. Our goal is to prepare the masses for impending doom, with a smile. Being prepared for zombies is exactly that, being prepared. No, this doesn’t mean we aren’t crazy, but at least we’ll have a fighting chance no matter what happens.

Using the zombie apocalypse is a fun way to get people thinking about the basics of being prepared for an emergency.

While I have yet to meet a zombie, I have been through a couple of power outages.

A “zombie apocalypse?” Is this for real? My tax dollars funding CDC nonsense? What’s next, Preparedness 102 – Mall Ninja’s Unite? Give me a break.

This is how rear admiral’s get to spend their time at the CDC? Writing garbage about a zombie apocalypse?

    QUIT WASTING MY MONEY!

As a doctor, I applaud the CDC’s recognition of the potential danger a Zombie Apocalypse presents. This is a great first step in the development of a National Emergency Response Plan and I encourage the CDC to continue to develop and refine a comprehensive Zombie Apocalypse Response Plan! Good work & Keep up the fight!

One important point that is left out of many survival kit discussions is medicine expiration. A bottle of Ibuprofen indicates *when* it expires, but not *how* it expires. If I take expired pills of a given medication, will it hurt me or just not be effective? Evacuation packs are not updated frequently, and prescription medications cannot always be hoarded — so there needs to be a way for people to figure out what expired meds are safe to take.

The virus is “solanum” not “selenium”. Selenium is an element. Auto-correct fail.

    Add “Cricket bat” to list.

    Change plan to:
    1) Go ’round mums.
    2) Grab Liz.
    3) Head over to the Winchester.
    4) Have a cold pint.
    5) Wait for this whole thing to blow over.

How’s that for a slice of fried gold?

Forgot the guns. Major caliber for preference, but a few thousand rounds through a .22 should stop a f for all your semi-auto clean-up problems!air sized horde. Don’t forget spare clips (for bolt action rifles or M1
    Garands and Magazines

this post makes me feel patriotic- like someone up there actually has an ear to the population, even if they are just hearing a joke. much appreciated, CDC!

Thank you, if it takes Zombies to get the general public aware of disaster preparedness maybe you (the CDC/FEMA) should use them in public service announcement spots during prime time.
Also though im sure that the Men and Women at the CDC are hard working Doctors and researchers and general all around medical gurus im not too sure the cure rate you guys have is so high maybe 2 or 3 in 50 years or so and besides everyone knows the only real cure for a Zombie is a bullet, or something into the brain matter

This makes me so happy inside that the CDC is finally preparing for this! I love this article, Is it alright if we post something about this on our zombie website? Zombie Informer Also is it alright if we can use the badge you guys have?

Thanks and keep up the good work!

fantastic! granted, zombies may be unlikely, but some viral rabies-like disease that causes similar symptoms is not all that far-fetched.
I’ve been needing to get an emergency supply closet started. Maybe I’ll start adding an item or two on my grocery list every week.
Thank you, CDC for a list to get started with.

the largest problem with this list is it doesn\’t mention anything to defend yourself, i\’m sorry to say but before you get your hands on all the \”living essentials\” you\’ll need to get your hands on Weapons, both ammunition consuming and non, I.E. baseball bats, golf clubs, ect. I would strongly recommend both a rifle and a pistol for both long range and close range. Vehicles are also an essential, trucks preferably diesel that lasts the longest and is the least commonly used, and pedal bikes for those involved in your escape plan.
One of the other biggest things to remember is you\’re on your own unless you have a preplanned group of people involved, this could mean a friend, family, and/or both. Another is a refuge a camp in the middle of no where that a stock pile of ammunition and \”living essentials\” would be located.

Joshua, yes feel free to use the badge that’s what it’s there for! And please, spread the word!

    Thanks for reading.

It really depends on the zombies. If they’re Romero/Brooks, slow, lumbering zombies, a baseball bat will work just fine. Not so if they’re the Zack Snyder fast zombies. Running zombies change everything.

This might just actually spur me to make that emergency kid. CDC, you are made of awesome.

Guess I’ll stick to making an emergency kiT, since I’ve already made the emergency kid.

Yes. We are a prepping household. We also send our college students to school prepared with a ‘Two-week Emergency Food Box’, A Flu Kit/Medical Kit and a 72 hour Kit is in each vehicle.

For High School graduation, we are now giving a Medical Kit and a Tool bag as gifts.

sweetness.. all those yrs if reading.now if the cdc would just have practice drills in my area that would make my day. love you cdc people..

Not to be picky, but any way you can begin investigating BEFORE zombies actually are roaming the streets? Might cut down on a few problems…

This is genius. Probably also appealing to a subset of the population that had never before thought of making an emergency kit. Awesome.

“human corpse mysteriously reanimated to serve the undead” I’m not sure I trust someone who doesn’t do research. this person doesn’t know anything about folklore, classic (or Romero), or modern zombies. Only the Return of the Living Dead (John A Russo’s breed) eat brains.

Seriously, guys. Everyone knows that the refugee camp is the LAST place you want to go in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Hasn’t experience taught us anything?

This is hilariously awesome and very well thought out. Have to spread this around!

    Dear CDC,

If the popularity of this cute little article is enough to overload your servers, then what will happen when a real emergency occurs and ppl cannot access your website for information. It looks like you are under prepared yourself. Please fix that as soon as possible.

@mckenna You would be better off with a shotgun rather than a rifle when fighting zombies.

While I am a huge zombie fan, and well prepared for disaster, I must ask…

In a time when the Federal Government has a $14.3 Trillion debt, and cannot control spending, can you please post exactly how much government employee and/or contractor time was used to create this entertaining but wasteful page (including planning and approval), and how much it costs us (the taxpayer) in IT Services and support on expensive, secured government equipment to maintain such pages on a annual basis?

It’s not that I don’t think that you did a great jobs, and I thank you for the laughs. I just want to know how much these moments cost us.

I have bad news, it is too late. Unfortunately all one has to do is look at Congress and the RNC and see that the Zombie apocalypse has already started. The CDC should have acted sooner to prevent this travesty of nature, my only recourse is a small hut in the valley in the Himalayan range where I can wait this out then work to repopulate the earth.

This is a great step towards defeating zombies as a potential threat. If every household would have these supplies, they could hold out longer. There is a lot of good resources on the internet too about protection from zombies. I don’t think any of them carry the same weight as the CDC though. Zombie Blog Keep up the good work CDC, you are awesome!

Does this mean that the Fema camps that are being prepared for us will be safe from the Zombies? So all of my supplies that I have been storing for years are worthless…maybe I will just buy an AK47 and rig it with a powersaw just in case. Or hell maybe if I take all the vaccines that merck is trying to inforce and become a zombie…you know what they say if you can’t beatem join em. Oh, and Don’t look behind you right now…

Is it true the CDC will shoot people per protocol who are deemed “infected” if they don’t follow directions and get in line?

Bats are good because they don’t run out of ammunition but machetes are much cheaper and can remove heads.

@Bo “Your tax dollars” paid for what might have been the most successful campaign for emergency preparedness awareness in US history, bringing down the CDC server. Money well spent I’d say. Also, I’d like to see if you still scoff when the zombie hordes are closing in on you.

The stuffy, over serious, CDC; has a sense of humor?

Given the choice, I would have believed in a “Zombie Apocalypse” first! 😉

The corpus of work on Zombie Apocali is abundantly clear: effective preparation requires extensive weaponry and large structures that lend themselves to rapid fortification (such as a mall or other large building). Perhaps USAMRIID can offer a companion publication to this guide? (given, of course, their access to tanks)

Seriously though, thanks CDC for having a sense of humor on an otherwise important subject. It’s good to know bureaucrats in DC aren’t all walking around like a bunch of…well…zombies.

Such great advice. I also think the baseball bat is a necessary addition to this kit. I do wonder if the person who wrote this is in need of an assistant? I would enjoy working for such a forward thinking and unique individual.

It’s nice to see you are finally telling people the truth about your fictional organization. You lie to the public about the dangers of vaccines, about how safe fluoride is in our water, you use us a human guinea pigs in your experiments and all the while push BIG PHARMA. I’ve always thought you were a joke, now I know it! If there are zombies it is because you created them.

@Bo #16: Yes, we all know that writing a blog post about emergency kits takes at least 100 man hours and over 9000 tax dollars and has nothing to do with public health matters.

The only thing more disturbing than the CDC posting this nonsense is the number of people who seem glad that they did. Now I know how Bush was elected to two terms.

Now this is Government transparency we can believe in. While the CDC could safely lock themselves in the basement of the CDC, they choose rather to education the American people to prepare themselves for the Zombie Apocalypse. It is forward thinking people like the CDC (and of course Louisville Slugger) who will ensure the continuation of the human race.

My hat is off to you CDC. Job well done!

Check out zombiehunters.com home of Zombie Squad the worlds premier non-stationary cadaver suppression task force. Our overall goal has been to raise awareness of not only zombie related threats but also emergency preparedness. We urge every one to be prepared for any emergency and to always have a plan. I personally have a room stocked and ready for the zombie apocalypse. I keep everything from water and non-perishable foods (mre\’s really aren\’t bad if you get used to them) to various melee and ranged projectile weapons. Whether or not you believe in zombies and the threat they pose this article stresses the importance or emergency preparedness which everyone should take very seriously.

CDC – You just made government cool again. Applause for having the courage to actually do something creative to draw interest to an important subject, disaster preparedness. Well Done! My favorite Zombie survival tip from Max Brooks – First ascend the staircase, then destroy it.

I would like to thank the CDC, especially Rear Admiral Khan for this message.

Preparedness is a serious matter, and so are zombies.

What matters is that more people will be thinking about protecting their families in a pro-active manner.

    stay vigilant!

Everytime you read the phrase ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ you should insert the words the CDC refuses to say: Radiation Apocalypse.

Add the CDC to the list of ridiculous government/control organizations that must be ignored.

As a 17 year old boy, this article really appeals to me. Not only were ya able to get your message out for GENERAL preparedness, you were able to appeal to a generation about zombie preparedness. You guys did a great job. Keep up the good work.

Btw, we all know what \”isolation and quarantine\” mean. Everyone in major cities, evacuate immediately! haha

I never understand why in all of these disaster preps no one in the government ever recommends including a basic firearm. Katrina witht he loot gangs and rogue police officers is a prime example.

In all seriousness, if people have the means to prepare for an uncertain future, and they dont do it, then they are going to be kicking themselves. It is a psychological term called “Normalcy Bias” that these people suffer from. Faced with all the evidence, people would rather keep watching American Idol and Entertainment Tonight, then face the fact that natural disasters can and do happen. I dont worry about things, because I prepare.

I cant believe it. They failed to mention firearms and amunition. Thats the basics when you leave any location for new surroundings.

What a great way to reach more people about emergency preparedness!

Seriously, you do need some sort of survival knife/saw/hatchet. A utility knife is just too weak. Our 72 hour kits includes a small hatchet, saw and a knife.

James, thanks for reading! We have definitely been battling with server issues, but we do want to point out that the blogs are on a different server than our main CDC pages so in the event of a real emergency we wouldn’t be dealing with a system overload.

While we sort out current issues we’ve loaded the blog onto a temporary page, pass this URL along: http://emergency.cdc.gov/socialmedia/zombies_blog.asp

    Thanks for the comment.

Sorry, that kit is an epic fail. There’s nothing in it to deal with zombies who attack you. Nor is there anything in it to seal the house.

They’ve also encouraged people to gather outside of their home in the event of a zombie apocalypse. This is a Bad Idea ™. If there are zombies in your house, there are zombies outside. You have fewer options for a good zombie defense outside of a structure.

They also don’t identify good spots to use as rally points or evacuation centers. Or even good spots to hole up for a few days to get your stuff together.

You’re also going to want a get out of dodge (GOOD) bag, as well as a GOOD plan (identify a rally point for those who are part of your zombie survival group) and supplies to keep your vehicle running so you can get out of dodge.

The Zombie Survival Guide isn’t bad, but there’s some bad strategy in it, and it does nothing to address the breakdown of societal order during the zombie apocalypse.

My husband always told me I wasn’t ready for a zombie apocalypse. Now I will be able to get ready. lol. Thanks. Way to make emergency preparedness an interesting topic.

I think this is an excellent campaign for the CDC to breathe life back into disaster preparedness. I love the zombie theme & think its timely, unique, and has plenty of shock factor to make it memorable and highly effective.

The levity behind this is something that will interest my teenage boys…something that is so hard to do in this day and age(unless your a pixel, perhaps). Anyway, I really like this campaign, because it presents a disaster in a manner that I can actually entice my family into discussion; and it will provide some assistance for any potential disaster as well. Awesome job!

Worthless without a recommendation for a means of self defense. Does the CDC think that those mindless zombies with a taste for living brains are going to leave everybody alone just because they are carrying a bag with a gallon of water and a couple of sandwiches in it? Are zombies going to meekly scratch at the door and wait for somebody to come out to check the mailbox? And are the cops really going to respond within a reasonable amount of time when the zombies are chewing on your children?

What a waste of our tax dollars. It’s a shame that the childishness of the Obama administration has even infiltrated the CDC.

I notice quite a few people posting about the usefulness of a baseball bat in the event of a zombie apocalypse. If you read the Zombie Survival Guide, it explains with gruesome detail exactly what happens to the guy with the baseball bat. It wasn’t pretty and now there’s a zombie with a baseball bat. In all seriousness, though, I think the biggest reason that weapons weren’t addressed in this particular post was largely because it’s designed to be an all encompassing emergency plan, not JUST for zombies. You’re not going to need a shotgun in a hurricane. You specifically. Yea, you, I see you reading this post. You definitely don’t need a shotgun. Ever.

But yea, general purpose emergency plan. And it’s a joke. Just go with it. 😀

—Solego, Zombie Outbreak Response Team (ZORT) Member #42. Helena, MT.

To those posting that “this is a waste of tax dollars” I can only say that you yourself are a waste of tax dollars with your incredible idiocy. Articles like this draw attention from a generation that would normally not consider emergency preparedness. While I personally am a member of such a generation, the state I live in (Florida) makes it abundantly clear that emergency preparedness is not something that should be taken lightly. While this article is somewhat light-hearted, it draws proper attention by a demographic that would not normally think of such preparedness techniques. I certainly hope those making statements like this are purely trolls sent over by Fox News as otherwise, you are imbeciles. An article on preparedness without the word zombie would not attract the public eye as much as one that would. I, for one, have never even been to the CDC website before today and this exact article lead me here, further proving my point and allowing me to respond to your unwanted criticisms.

And to those saying weapons over essentials, it does not matter if you have a gun to fire or bat to swing if you don’t have the strength to lift them due to muscle fatigue from dehydration or starvation. In a zombie-like scenario, bunkering is the best strategy for the common person to survive given an adequate stash of supplies. Obviously, the standard, non-couponing household will have a limited supply of up to a month (not considering fresh water) but a much longer supply is needed to allow for basic zombie degradation (depending on region and population density). Weapons are more likely needed against pillaging neighbors than from unwanted advances by the undead. Normally a strong offense is the best defense but in a case of being extremely outnumbered, this is definitely not the best motto.

I thought this to be a culturally relevant and FUN way to express the importance of emergency preparedness. Obviously, zombies are not real (yet) but the effect of disaster on infrastructure is very real. A good way to get an idea of how life might be in the event of a widespread disaster is to look at how survivors in zombie horror movies… well.. survive. Their first concern is often a safe haven… shelter. Then going up Maslow’s Hierarchy, they would likely seek food and water, health, and eventually reconnection with civilzation. This is not much different if at all than those displaced by natural disaster or affected by widespread disease.
For those of you worried about government spending, this blog was going to be written regardless of whether or not Dr. Khan chose to use zombie apocalypse as an analogy for natural disaster/pandemic. The fact that you think this blog costs extra demonstrates that you have probably not been to the blog before, which has been in existence for quite some time now.
CDC asked Dr. Khan to make the topic of this blog about emergency preparedness and he did just that. Fortunately for YOU, he decided to make it FUN and not boring. A blog that normally gets 3,000 hits over a period of weeks as received 50,000 hits in a matter of days.
Let’s quit making this a matter of politics and make it a matter of public health awareness and emergency preparedness, which is exactly what it is.

Does the CDC normally work alongside religious professionals such as priests, ministers, and rabbis? It might be useful, in case of a zombie apocalypse, to determine whether some form of holy water or exorcism might have any effect, or whether that’s just vampires.

Ali, the real question is how does a resiliency framework hold up in the zombie attack? In this post self-sufficiency remains an important component of the resilience framework, but how does the rest of the resilience framework hold up in a zombie apocalypse.

everyone should get the zombie survival guild. 2 key things, 1. if you run up stairs destroy the stairs, and 2. swords don’t jam or run out of bullets.

FIRST, THIS IS A WASTE OF MONEY, IT CANT BE JUSTIFIED!!!!!!!!
SECOND, IM AN RN AND HAVE USED THE CDC’S SITE NUMEROUS TIMES HOW CAN MY PTS WITH AN ALTERED MENTAL STATUS OR LOW IQ USE YOR SITE FOR BASIC INFO..
THIRD, I SERIOUSLY QUESTION SOMEONES INTEGRITY AT THE CDC “”””””””you are not a govt agency FOR COMIC RELIEF”””’
FINALLY, I GAVE MY EMAIL SOMEONE PLEASE ATTEMPT TO JUSTIFY THIS WASTE OF MONEY,GOVERNMENT RESOURCES, AND MY TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the CDC that being prepared for an emergancy is top priorty, but what i dont think anyone relizes is how real this could be. so many zombie movies and books, its only a matter of time till somebody creates such a virus that will make the zombie apocalyose more than just a hollywood blockbuster idea. We all must be prepared for natural disaters but i believe the undead walking the earth will be a glorious day for us zombie hunters.

How do I find out about my Local Zombie Responce team? If I dont have one how do I start one?

Well done CDC. Don’t worry about the critics complaining about tax money and such… They’re already zombies. If I may suggest:
    1. Don’t go out at night.
    2. Try to avoid crowded areas.
    3. Try not to draw attention.
Hooray for the MIW (men in white)!
    Thanks again CDC.

Well friends I am sad to say that there is noone to talk about with this subject… It’s depressing when the ones closest to you say that you look like a fool for something such as this to happen… Well all I can say is that I will be ready if and when this does happen…

    Kudos CDC!
A large part of your function is advertising and education to increase the public awareness. This particular advertising scheme was pure genius.
You can’t buy the kind of buzz generated across the Net and media by this innovative approach. THANK YOU for leveraging my tax dollars. (Also for helping me plan to survive the zombies)

Don’t forget to add salt to your emergency zombie kit. Helps fend off the zombies, and makes your food tasty!

this is not cool stop being stupid and get prepared of this and also buy a bat just in case.

I have a “ditch” bag, with the fix all for just about every possible scenario I could think of. I have divvied it between my primary bag, and a secondary “scout” bag, which is light weight. I have means of protection for my companions and I, too.

I would hate to see it happen, but I would survive; guaranteed.

What a great idea! Would have never looked up an article about emergancy preparation had it not been approached this way. Love it and glad to know how to get prepared! Thank you!

lol. So many kids today really get hyped up for teh zombie appocalypse… Yeah i’ll admit that running around killing zombies without having to worry about going to prison sounds alright to me to at first anyway.
But what happens when you run out of, say, toilet paper or tooth paste and there’s no one to make more. Think of all the little things, you enjoy and take for granted. Now would you really enjoy it when you’ve gotten sick of the reality of zombies… The world would literally stink like rotting flesh.
Another thing is that zombies wouldn’t be the only thing you have to look out for. There would be roving bands of living thinking humans whom, without the threat of law, would be more than happy to rape and kill you just to take what you have, and to enjoy whatever sick twisted fantasy they cook up on the spot.

Suddenly A Zombie Appocalypse doesn’t sound so Awsome.

kudo’s to the cdc!! I think it was a WONDERFUL idea by you doing this! It’s just like everything else out there, you have to be unique and CREATIVE to get your POINT accross!! AND YOU WANT IT TO GET ACCROSS TO ALL AGE GROUPS!! And apparently ya’ll did!! 😉 MAJOR kudo’s!!!!!!!

What is this? have you lost your mind? zombies? this on a cdc site. your fucking crazy.

I love the idea of linking preparedness with current pop culture and getting the message out through social media. I think that most folks will take the humor in it to prepare their own family plan. However, I am really disturbed by the photo used on the opening tag – to me, the photo depicts a an ultra paranoid person who some may construe as “over-thinking” and having delusional thoughts about preparedness. This photo may also lead viewers to leap to the conclusion that folks with phobias and delusions are the ones who may take preparedness seriously. I was also disturbed by the photo showing the dirty fingernails, which again led me to think that the person in the image wasn”t grounded in reality, or taking care of themselves. I don’t believe this is the type of image CDC should be promoting when we promote healthy people through preparedness and prevention. I am also concerned that there may be some negative feedback from the religious community who may give the Agency negative feedback by the linking of Zombies to preparedness. Many religions associtate Zombies to Satanic worship, and this linkage may relfect somewhat badly on the Agency. I hope it doesn’t in the long run, because I can see the fun in it for the younger generation who loves this type of pop culture association. Please consider changing the main photo on the tag to something that folks wouldn’t associate with paranoid or delusional thoughts or self-neglect. Thanks.

The first thing you need is a suit of armor so if you had to you could fist fight your way out

But you forgot to mention for preparation for a real zombie apocalypse, we have to be armed to the teeth! But its probably not very responsible of the CDC to encourage weaponizing the United States citizens…

One essential omission from the CDC’s writeup: There are few better protections in the event of a zed infestation than an original Real Deal Brazil recycled-tarp, the same incomparable headwear seen atop zombie-killer-king Woody Harrelson’s own noggin throughout the 2009 hit film “Zombieland.” The hats’ heavy tarp is tough to bite through, especially for lumbering members of the mindless, brains-crazed undead. So make sure your own emergency kit isn’t sorely lacking in this most-fundamental of protections — because once the zombies rise up from their newly gaping graves, online mail-order may be a bit limited. Act now, while you’re still alive enough to manage it …

ok, a few things i wanna clarify:

    1. Sanitation and Hygiene – Why bother? You’ll be running all lover the place trying to escape, why care about how clean your teeth or hair is? (sure the towels will come in handy if you get zombie brains splattered all over you after bashing them with a baseball bat)

    2. Clothing and Bedding – Why would you need clothing? just wear the stuff on your back, if you need clothing, just break into an abandoned clothing store and grab some more duds.

    3. Important Documents – Dont bother with all this stuff, its a zombie apocalypse, the first thing youll be thinking is getting out of there alive, just take whatever you got in your wallet and book it. (Driver’s license, ID Badge, credit card, etc.)

also, you left out one thing:

well, there you go, a “correct” list of what to take with you and how to defend yourself in a Zombie apocalypse. Hope this helps you all.

Now i think that the CDC has gone crazy. If someone is dead that means their body organs stop functioning and the brain controls everything you do and the heart provides the blood for the brain to function correctly and if if the heart stops then the brain stops and can not be made functional again because no blood means that your body cant do anything. Zombies are pure fiction, the dead cant rise and chase us because the bodies have probably decayed and when you die you DIE and nothing can bring you back. Now that is fact and zombies are fiction. Its common sense.

This campaign wasn’t just an amusing way to advertise disaster preparedness. It was a test of the CDC servers, which could well have failed if this had been a real emergency. I would hope that CDC has learned something from this and taken steps to support sudden and massive traffic spikes.

Thanks for reading our blog and posting a comment. We did learn a lot about our blog servers during this campaign, however we would like to note that:

Blogs.cdc.gov, which is CDC’s blog server, is located on a server outside of our primary Website. CDC’s primary Web servers that house CDC’s health information, outbreak information and emergency information are protected by a caching service that allows our servers to handle dramatic increases in traffic. CDC is prepared to handle large volumes of Web traffic that may result in public health emergency.

Rest assured that during a real emergency CDC.gov would be ready.

    Thanks again!

Great Information! The CDC is on the right track with this campaign… It brought a lot of awareness to an important subject… Whoever thought it up should get a raise!!!

The existence of the tact taken in writing this blog proves one thing: The zombie apocolypse is already here, and the brain-dead have already been re-animated at the CDC.

Just have to say, the basic preparation that the CDC is giving us, is more than adequate in any fall down of the earth. You need your basic materials just to survive and if say a tsunami hit us, we would be prepared with the necessary supplies to survive. The CDC is only telling us what we should already know and have set up for when the world is taken over by zombies or by each other.

I have been prepared for a zombie outbreak ever since I first watched Shawn of the Dead. I can’t tell you all of the details (confidentiality stuff) but I could share a few tips that could potentially save your life.

Tip 1: As we have learned from zombies in movies, games, and books. Zombies are attracted towards sound (gunshots, explosions, car alarms, etc…) so my first tip is: STAY QUIET.
Tip 2: Large groups will slow you down and will raise the chances that the disease will infiltrate your group and within days the whole gang will be undead. On the other hand wandering around by yourself in post apocalyptia will leave you vulnerable and lonely, which can be death sentences around the living dead. So tip #2? STAY IN A SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED GROUP. 4-8 people is the ideal number for survival in a Zombie scenario. But your group can’t just be the first 8 people that you see, make your group before the outbreak strikes. Make sure that each individual has something to bring to the table, whether it’s electronic know how, or is a dead aim. And most importantly, make sure that you get along well with each person in the group so that there is no fighting within the group. Teamwork is ESSENTIAL in a zombie outbreak.

Tip 3: This is a tip that is often overlooked in zombie games/movies. HYGIENE. Keeping yourself clean will help fight off things like flu, the common cold, pink eye, pretty much anything that you could sick from before the zombiepocolypse you can get sick from after the zombiepocolypse. So make sure to brush your teeth, clean your clothes, and wash behind your ears!

Tip 4: You never know how long it will be during the zombie outbreak before you can restock supplies such as water, food, ammo, or medicine. So Tip 4 is STOCK UP SUPPLIES. You may need to stock up supplies for as long as 1-6 months. Running out of food, medicine, ammo, etc… will cripple any chances you have at long term survival in a zombie apocalypse.

Tip 5: What’s the worst thing that can happen to you during a zombie outbreak? Well other than the obvious (infection) the answer is: depression. Depression will lower your immune system, cause stress, and cause you to be tired constantly. So Tip 5 is KEEP UP YOUR SPIRITS. I know that it would be hard to not be depressed when your friends and family have been turned into flesh eating zombies, but you need to try your hardest to keep up a light attitude.

Those are my tips. I have more but I’m starting to get tired of typing. So I hope this helps for when the Zombpocolypse hits.

I have been preparing for this day for a long time im glad others are taking it seriously lest our entire civilization be wiped out when they rise. My biggest concern is fresh water, where to find it how to keep it drinkable and how long will the water supply be down if we DO avoid armageddon at the hands of the zombie hordes.

I heard about this article via an NPR “All Things Considered” piece and just *had* to come and look.

What a creatively comical way to address a number of issues – bravo! A little levity does go a long way, and using popular culture to facilitate thinking about preparedness was innovative.

Thanks for the article – as a Florida resident, I’ll be sure to pack an extra bottle of water in case “waves of zombies” follow hurricanes and flooding!

P.S. To those complaining “is this for real” and “wasting tax dollars,” PLEASE do us ALL a favour next time and read the article BEFORE you post your comment. It’s very evident from your uninformed post that you did NOT even read CDC’s article, which is REALLY about disaster preparedness, PERIOD. Spoil sports!

I have had a zombie invasion readiness kit in my vehicle for awhile now. I’m glad this article was posted as maybe more people will keep emergency supplies at hand…if not for a zombie apocalypse, then for more frequently occurring everyday disasters. Being stranded without supplies sucks, zombies or not!!!

glad the government is finally admitting that they created zombies and are using them for secret drug testing. although it alarms me that they released this information as it means that zombie shave escaped the secret island on which they were held

Yup, too bad this is impossible, and it would end too quickly for anyone to even care, considering how there’s nothing to control a dead body, maybe a type of rabies that makes people go insane? But not zombies, here’s my explanation.

I think it’s ridiculous that you’ve posted this! You have made your agency a joke. How could anyone take this seriously? I think I’m more than prepared after watching countless zombie movies. Maybe you should keep your focus on real life disasters and refrain from commenting on science fiction!

U HAVE TO BE FREAKING KIDDING ME!!!!!!! WHAT IS THIS CRAP?! THE CDC DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING MORE IMPORTANT TO TALK ABOUT. I DON’T BELIEVE IT AND I NEVER WILL!

The best zombie apocalypse survival guide show is the Walking Dead, and in the seasons last episode, we saw how valiantly the CDC kept up the efforts. Good job, guys.

Thank you CDC, the person in charge of this add was thinking outside the box. It seem as if most government agencies try to avoid this type of thinking.
I know your sight must have had a lot of hits, and more people are now thinking of being prepared for some type of disaster. Even if it is not a Zombie attack they might be more perpared for an earthquake or any other type of disaster.
Thanks again, Herman Garcia, Captain,U.S.Forest Service

Wow! Its true we should be ready for any natural disasters…But the “Scary” part is the zombie’s…Can it really happen? I think it wouldnt happen if well humans took care of Earth more often and there was less polution and nucleor weapons out there…Less of the things that shouldnt be here like cars and stuff that arent healthy for the planet we practically poison our own planet every year…People Recycle and start living a Healthy Life Style…Before its too late…I dont want to be Zombie food…

in addition to zombie preparedness, we must also prepare for suburban ninja armies and the batmen…oh for goodness sake, why did there have to be batman platoons?

I am surely not too accustomed to this subject matter but I do prefer to check out blogs for layout tips and intriguing topics. You honestly described a matter that I in most cases really do not care a great deal about and manufactured it highly fascinating. This is a nice blog that I’ll be aware of. I currently bookmarked it for future reference.

It really angers me to see people complaining about there money being a waste as it goes to places such as the CDC. Can you not read between the lines?! This article isn’t solely for the preparedness of zombies, but this can help us in any emergency. DUH. Most people aren’t prepared when a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, or even power outage hits. This list aids in the survival of any of those things, does it not? It’s basically a friendly reminder of the ways you can prepare yourself for ANYTHING. Stop being whiney. And by the way, it’s up to you to procure a firearm in case of a zombie apacolypse… but keep it out of your children’s hands…

wooden bats r better less ware down over a period of time aluminum will dent and ware down…

Let me be the first to say: Bravo! I totally agree; until I saw the word Zombie, I was not interested in how to prepare for an emergency. Although we do have plans in place (I say this loosely) we would have to scramble around looking for all of our stuff! So once again, I will thank you for having me look at this in a totally different way! And be better prepared…

Obviously you guys are missing the point. its not about a zombie attack. i mean in my opinion that would be pretty fun, but its about preparing for natural disasters as they mention like every other sentence.

So as someone said before its a way to attract peoples attention and awareness of what to do if a natural disaster happens. The most common ones that CDC mentioned were hurricanes and tornadoes.

And about wasting money i dont really know what your talking about any person with any common sense could write this, all it takes is a little of time. so dont worry your tax dollars are safe.

But if some disease ever came to infect people on earth creating any sort of zombie like apocalypse, i would recommend reading “The Zombie Survival Guide” by Max Brooks. It provides some really helpful information which can also be used for natural disasters. One thing that they forgot to mention was a portable generator or portable propane gas oven, this is very helpful for cooking canned food or disinfecting water when your on the move.

One more thing STAY AWAY FROM PITTSBURGH! for some reason people would all come to pittsburgh just because george romero lives there…

The Zombies have asked that we all refrain from using the Z word. It has very negative connotations and feel it hurts there cause.

I think this is awesome, using humor to actually teach something. If it can work in the class room why cant it work for a government agency.

to all you critics “limber up” and grow a sence of humor
    Thanks CDC

Is there any scientific or factual evidence that could possibly explain how a zombie apocalypse or why a zombie apocalypse might occur. This whole article will just send people panicking over something they shouldn’t be worrying about, but rather worry about something much more real and possible such as a tornado, earthquake, or any other kind of probable natural disaster. I don’t believe in the typical Hollywood zombie, and until given factual and solid scientific evidence explaining how and why this would occur, I refuse to acknowledge this as a valid warning, but rather a frivolous blog post that will only stoke the fire of zombie fanatics and believers. While I respect their opinions, as they are entitled believe whatever they may want to, scientifically based or not, it is a bit annoying when the CDC posts something that lacks proper support on a logical and scientific field.

Zombies dont just eat brains a true master of zombie know it all would know that. I cant believe there are still folks out there that believe that just because they are zombies they automatically just go for the brain, because really they go for whatever they can sink their teeth into. Whats next your also going to say that they also go around screaming BRAINS, BRAINS! Why dont you go and get up to date on your zombie info because god knows you reallly need it.

I think we should refrain from bashing the folks who ask things like “Is this for real?” or “How many of MY tax dollars were wasted?” Clearly these unfortunate individuals are lacking a functioning sense of humor (whether they were born that way, or whether the deficiency was acquired through some tragic accident). Can you imagine going through life without the ability to discern and enjoy all things funny? What small, sad lives they must lead! I feel sorry for them. They deserve our pity.

I loudly applaud your approach! I have been screaming/teaching “out of the box” thinking to improve the culture with infection prevention to give the information that is needed to those who normally avoid the subject and the people who are associated with it. It works! My hat off to you!

Is the CDC stupid!? Telling people to worry about having their papers ready to present to the government, but leaving the most important thing out of post-disaster survival? Which would be having a means to defend yourself from looters, government soldiers (post martial law, as in hurricane katrina) trying to force you to concentrated locations to be under their control, and of course zombies. If there is any such disaster similar to the one described above, my first thing in the list of my survival kit is my AK . The survival kit above looks like something some girl-scout or gay feminist would have, not a true survivalist. Guns are good in all disasters not only for defense from looters and other enemies, but good for hunting and putting food on the table.

I think the reason they left out guns, is because it is typical of the U.S. government to be anti-American and against our rights, they don’t like the idea of us being armed.

    hey, is this serious??
I’m not north america… I’m in Brazil, and CDC warning for a “zombie” attack seems too metaphorical for me… not to say a real JOKE, or even TOTAL FAKE…
Is zombies just a fiction or american centres of technology have developed chemicals for turning humans into monsters?

Great piece. My only suggestion is that in the history section, you should give a shout-out not only to “The Walking Dead” (as a previous commenter did) but to The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo “Pan’s Labyrinth” del Toro and Chuck “The Town” Hogan. First two of the books (“The Strain” and “The Fall”) are already out–third one arrives this October. The heroes are epidemiologists from the CDC–woot! Give yourselves a hand!

Oh, and reminding us about general emergency preparedness? That’s cool, too.

lol and alll my friends were like”theres no zmbies! the got. would know!” well now they do, dont look so crazy now do i?

“most people worry if they left the stove on, i worry about the zombie apocalypse
    (>.<)

What about animals I have five horses and five dogs to think about and I aint never leaving them even if I had to die in the process!

For all of you people complaining about the government spending money on zombies, you are missing the point.

The idea is to get the attention of people who would otherwise not prepare for REAL, ACTUAL emergencies. By getting the attention of people and getting them to seriously think about an emergency kit, this is going to save lives and SAVE YOU MONEY.

    Got it?

Doesn’t our ignorant government have anything else to worry about?? Typical bureaucratic bull. Get a real f&#&$#* job

Using the threat of a “zombie apocalypse” is a clever way to help people understand how to prepare for a disaster. Unlike a single event, being a natural disaster, widespread illness, chemical or biological weapons atack, a zombie apocalypse forces people to see emergency preparedness from a more global standpoint. In any survival situation you must have food, water, shelter & protection. However, if a zombie apocalypse were to occur, you would not only have to have the supplies to survive but would also have to have the ability to protect the supplies & your family. Most likely you would need to have enough supplies to allow yourself to be self contained for a minimum of 3 months & then have a plan for either how to procure, make, grow or produce your own supplies. Regardless of your take on “zombies”, this is a great way to look at emergency preparedness & survival. Kudos to the CDC!

People really…….stop complaining about the cdc wasting your money….Bush did plenty of that way before this article was written.

As a mom with 2 teens that love the zombie culture, have just attended their first zombie walk in Boston and are both playing left for dead right now……

this blog article is perfect…i read it to them while they were waiting for a next level in the game to load and then read them the funny comments…they LOVED it and it immediately prompted a discussion on what we would do if an emergency happened and what we need to have in the house to survive not only a zombie invasion but ANY emergency!

GREAT JOB ON PULLING IN THEIR GENERATION!

Ive never visited until now and its because my sister told me that someone told her this article was here…and im gonna tell. Others and my kids have already texted their friends…so how can it be a bed thing?? Look at how many people will take being prepared more seriously.

What a great idea! I love it: 221 years is never too late for the US government to learn that humor is an effective communication tool!

okay what if zombies over run the world and the CDC has no plan for that what then hmmmm. ??????

And to think this is the same organization that banned prairie dogs as pets back in 2003. Sad, VERY SAD!

To Bo, who was bitching about his tax dollars at work…first I doubt you have a job so don’t worry about “your tax dollars” second I thought it was a great way to get the idea of making home emergency kits out to everyone including horror geeks.

Bravo to the creators of a disaster preparedness guide that will not only be read with enthusiasm, it will be forwarded and shared in the social networks

You guys do realize the cdc only did this to raise natural disaster awareness. They discovered that after after the word zombie appeared on twitter the audience spiked. Unfortunately, for sometime, they were so successful that the page crashed and were rendered ineffective.

Even thou you joke about this subject be aware of the problems around us. not everyone is smart as you can see. but in fact in the 1940s the Russan govt. did devop. a toxin that could do as this blog said. Study your history my friends.

i see everything from ppl hating this to people quoting funny movies. the event however unlikly you may think it is, should be taken seriously. the key to survival in this situation or any other is being prepared. may i suggest max brooks’ book the zombie survival guide…start there.

I’m taking this as it is. A warning of a Zombie Apocalypse!!!! It’s coming and I don’t care which one of you is standing in front of me all zombied out! I will end you as fast as any other zombie!

Thanks for the question Sissy. Pets are an important part of your emergency plan. Make sure to include food and water for your animals when putting together your emergency kit (and any additional supplies like medicine or toys). When planning your evacuation route, you should make alternate housing arrangements for your pets in advance, since pet-friendly shelters may not be available during the emergency period. Identifying pet boarding facilities that are located along your evacuation route and outside of the danger zone are important steps to ensuring your pets will have a safe place to go. When evacuation orders are issued, you should call the boarder to ensure that they have availability. Here’s a useful checklist for your pets on Ready.gov, FEMA’s website for emergency preparedness.

    Thanks for reading!

I’d like to know why everyone thinks that theyd be trying to survive. With the likely percentage of infection across the land in all the scenarios we imagine, theres a 99% chance that youll be a zombie too!! what makes you think that it couldnt “happen to me?” why would you ASSUME that youll be fighting them? chances are youll be stumbling and moaning as well. have fun. ill try to. im at least gonna be a fashionable zombie. Ill wear a hat or something.

Well intersting, whats the CDC not telling us ???? My emergency kit is already made though.

First, I think that some of these people who are upset that taxpayer dollars are funding this are just angry, hostle individuals who probably are the “rich” and can’t see the purpose behind this whole thing.

Now, I work in EMS in CA., so we here understand Emergency Preparedness in the form of floods, earthquakes, and fires. But, we as a people can’t underestimate the fact that people do have disease that walk among us, and this could be a true situation. No matter what it is, although Zombies might be a stretch (you notice I’m not saying there is no way that this could happen), we still need to be prepared for any disaster.

Use your common sences. If someone walks up to you, looks like death warmed over, your not going to stick around and find out if they are dead, your going to kill it and run. Just like a flood. If there is warnings that your house is going to float away, you better get your stuff and leave.

CDC is going to find out about any diseases that is going on and help the population. This whole thing is to let people know to be prepared. So just do it.

    Thank you CDC.

Really people? really? This is the Most outrageous thing i have ever heard….good grief, really?I am saying this as i am sucking in air and rolling my eyes around….unbeleivably the most stupidous thing I have ever heard and these are grown people saying this. ..let me just say…if this does happen it IS satans demons that are th zombies and all Gods children have been called to heaven…get a life !!

I absolutely loved this post! I’m one of those people who believe that anything is possible in this day and age, including a zombie apocalypse! The tips you provided are great and I’m going to start getting my emergency kit together asap. I’m going to also add, per commenter Donovan Young, an aluminum baseball bat to my kit as well. Cause we all know to get away you might have to take some zombies out!

Thanks to CDC for this useful article,
(although some stupid ppl would just laugh and make fun of it …)

i think one vital item is missing in the emergency kit, and that is “Portable water purification tool”,(working on battery, with ultra-violet effect which disinfects water and prepares it for drinking )

also if the bag, be a “Solar Power Charger Bag”, would be very good, since it can supply enough charge for our electric stuff (radio, cellphone, torch, ….) durig daytime sunshine.

thanks again for your super article 😉

well zombies are a little far fetched but look at 1918 flu , people scared to go out of there homes . but who knows ???? a lot of strange thing are happening now i would hide in the basement first for a few days with food an water an others thing said here but not only a am fm radio but a two way cb radio an a small tv with batterys cell phone s might not work but keep both don’t forget lights an matches an candles an can openers non electric propane stove camping gear sleeping bags an gloves an rope and nails an wood to borad up windows if a zombies should get thu an some gas cans full of gas somewhere you can get to it an extra set of keys to a car no time to hot wire a car if a zombie is at the door , or the cdc say lets go !!! now!!!!

i really feel sorry for all of the morons who keep asking how much it cost the taxpayers to make this article because the entire goal of the article is to address emergency preparedness in general. kind of a focus with all of the tornadoes, floods, and other natural disasters happening on a regular lately. get a sense of humor guys………

but be real. i highly doubt that anyone wouldnt know what to do in a zombie outbreak. alot of people discuss it as entertainment.

the goverment has been the evil undead for years now. now that we may have a zombie invasion maybe more people will see this and finally put some one in charge who can actually do something for the country. but all they want to do is tax us to death, reallytheydont want our brains, just our money.

Very well written. What a genius way to get people interested! Other government agencies need to take note that this is exactly how you get potentially boring but extremely important information out to the masses. I honestly can’t believe some people are taking this at face value and completely missing the point that this is the CDC’s way of getting people’s attention about disaster preparedness. Got your attention, no? But please, while the rest of us are being vigilant and preparing for any number of possible emergency situations, you go on and keep complaining about where your tax dollars are going. That’s what matters, after all.

I think this is a great idea. Although I see tax dollars being spent like Bo said in his post, I however see it being spent in a good way. And to be honest, I did see a bunch on Ninjas hanging out at our local mall last week.

ok guys i highly dout that this will really is going to happen. but if it did it would be soooooo awsome

i really wanna know where i can get cdc publications like posters and handouts for this subjectfor me and some of my friends to have

I wish the CDC would politely & publically recognize the reasonable necessity of citizens being sufficiently armed so that they may better protect their precious & limited emergency supplies from those who would dispossess them of same & likewise increase the victim’s chances of survival during serious disasters such as the zombie apocalypse the CDC posits here. For without weapons the unarmed victims are easy prey for the armed predators who will be equally, if not more so due to lack of adequate forethought & preparation, as desperate to survive as the typical American family of four.

Every one the CDC will try so will other agencies. But no use all would be over run, they would have to leave lavatories and camps, we have hope. But we have no hope on other but are selfs and the people who r with us.

I wasent sure about zumbies but yes I allways prepare with food in cans watter, medicine and tools like lamps radios cell phones, and not just me but allway try to tell my family to be in case of an emergency for any kind of dessaster.

Are you guys seriously a GOVERNMENT INSTITUTION?!?!? Was the site hacked? I can’t believe this is what the government wastes its time on! ZOMBIES?!?!?!? really? I mean, people can’t come back from the dead! And, if it were a disease, it would be immediately quarantined upon notice by paramedics. I hope whoever wrote this was fired!

    I forgot!
    Thanks CDC
It’s about time a government agency told the truth.
Even though you had to do it in what others call a silly scenario or a waste of taxpayer money.
I thought it was brilliant using a Hollywood Zombie scenario since so many are brainwashed with Hollywood these days.
Just another sad truth about our world today

I should have been a fiction writer huh?
I wonder if I could get a job on the scifi network?
    Heres another scenario.

The Earth falls out of orbit because of a huge meteor storm from the breakup of a distant planet and it’s just enough trama to our belt to cause severe storms and solar tsunamis.
This creates panic because the tsunamis shut off all electrical power in the world.
They cause further devastation because crops die and people start starving.
All life in the oceans is wiped out from the poison that was growing on the broken planet and that starts stinking all over the world big time.
Causing disease and pestilence. People start looking at each other as food.
Thus the Zombie scenario again. Not as elaborate as my first scenario but another good example of what could happen to make a zombie scenario a reality.

It’s nice to know that while the CDC has done virtually nothing about my illness, Chronic Fatigue Immune Disfunction Syndrome, and millions are suffering, they are fully prepared for a zombie attack…. and have the time to write an indepth article about it…on my tax dollars. Way to go guys. Great PR to restore your tarnished credibility. ( NOT!)

People needs to realize this is to get younger crowds to prepare for an emergency, if you notice every bullet point says “like a hurricane or like some other natural disaster.”

you all say you’re gonna be prepared for a zombie apocalypse. Other disasters you can, but not zombies. no matter what, people would never be truly ready for the trauma caused by seeing a friend or family member, someone you love with eyes clouded over and wounds you know they didnt survive moving towards you. it would be hard to kill(or re-kill) something wearing their skin. there is only so much the human mind can take before breaking, and if it doesnt get you immediately it will get you eventually. if it starts either kill yourself (cowardly in most cases but respectable here) or, in a futile attempt, fight to the last. and if you do try to get out (still respectable) then stay out of large groups, people can be liabilities, and if you must i say 2 at least, 4 max. people can be liabilities because sometimes they can be more dangerous then a zombie, the line between sanity and madness is thin.

    It’s SYFY!

Hollywood is getting ready to start filming World War Z now. I am sure that movie will be a welath of information!

well i read many of the comments some people do not get that the CDC is just using this as a main-stream media way of informing people.. i myself just love seeing ZOMBIE APC. on the CDC website.. thx..

Ignore the naysayers. they don’t get it. I have a 19 year old son. We are in California, waiting for ‘the big one’. I could not get him- or his friends- interested in the Earthquake kit until now. Bravo! More! More!

I beleive for starters, everyone should watch Zombieland. It puts out some good useful pointers. Next, the outcome of there actually being a zombie apocalypse is unprobable, sadly i do say so. I wish there could be one…. We will see what we can do about this :-)

I’m ready for zombie emergency, as long as they don’t all break into the “thriller” – I haven’t mastered those moves yet…

Seriously, all of you people on the thread complaining about the CDC wasting tax dollars on making a “Zombie Apocalypse Prepardness Guide” don’t get the actual reason they posted it. Given what happened in Katrina, Japan, and more recently, down South, people are usually caught unawares by Nature and all her fury and don’t know how to keep themselves alive until help arrives. All of this is just basic emergency survival know-how that the average American can use to protect themselves against REAL emergencies. The use of Zombies is a way to garner attention from the public who would probably ignore this if it were a typical hurricane or earthquake survival guide and it is going to save lives, and taxpayer money, in the end when more people read this and follow these basic steps. Please stop being so ignorant and just be happy that someone in the government has at least a sense of humor.

I have been practicing for a zombie apocolypse, as in (routes, safe havens, safety packs, weapons, and advantage points.) I have a group together called NZRS ro (Nevada Zombie Response Squad) We will take them all down!

i can’t believe anyone would think of this article as a waste of government money. This might be the only way to get lazy, media-crazed teenagers such as myself to think about being prepared for a disaster. in other words, DOWN WITH THE ZOMBIE-HATERS!!

    OK!

Can the CDC Post a Preparedness plan for the Total Collapse of the Dollar? Should we be part of a co-op farm outside the city in order to afford food??

Will a year of food be enough?

OK, I get the whole “emergency plan” and its value. But seriously ZOMBIE?! I felt my intellect declining the more I read. As a member of a disaster response team, I take this matter more seriously then the majority of you “gamers” and “movie guru’s”. Whats next, a vampire apocolypse?! What a waste of tax dollars…please tell me there isnt a doctor in the world that would endorse or research the possibility of this “stupid” event of ever occurring. As if the CDC has nothing better to address than impossible and fictional events. On the otherhand, it looks as if, I may be wrong…there are mindless ZOMBIES reading and believing this garbage! Glad my fellow Americans have their priorities straight, no wonder we are going down the tubes!!!! AND GEEZE…I get it, you hate Republicans, stop using every media opportunity to make it politics….PSSSST “ITS NOT REAL!”

It took some guts, not to mention BRAINNNNSSSSSS, for the CDC to approach disaster preparedness is such a fun way.

Kudos, CDC, for devising a clever way of bringing attention to a topic most people don’t want to think about!

I am so ready for a zombie attack. I think it is cool other than all your friends and family and possibly even you dying. Most people think it will never happen, but guess what people it may not happen in your life time but it will happen sometime.

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN TO SURVIVE DURING A ZOMBIE ATTACK OR EPIDEMIC THEN GO OUT AND BUY THE BOOK “THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE COMPLETE PROTECTION FROM THE LIVING DEAD” IT HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED. THE BOOK IS BY MAX BROOKS.

Brilliant! What a wonderful application of social marketing to encourage preparedness among individuals who might not have actually considered it prior to the article.

Public Health discussions are now taking place among entirely new populations, including youth, gamers, and others. By framing the discussion in a manner that appeals to this group, important information is delivered, understood and acted upon.

As an added bonus, my children now think my pursuit of a DrPH is actually cool.

Thanks, CDC!! I only wish I’d thought of this first!!!

Now think it throu all those people that are just doing this because its the only thing they know, i mean come on a zombie apocolypse?? HA mabey in your dreams but if its true then all i can say is dont be foolish cause they are people with souls so every one that you kill spends all eternity in HELL.do you want to be one of them,, to spend eternity in HELL i mean come on you know.just think about it.

My health teacher just assigned a brochure on safety to make. I think I just found my topic.

HA! And this ‘Zombie” thing is probly set up by them. and there probly make a disease that does somthing to the body almost exactly how we know zombies. -_-

Great Job CDC and all the people that actually read the article and gave it this much thought. I ran out of time to read all 200+ posts on this discussion, so I am sorry if I am repeating this, but if you want to add one more thing to your Zombie Kit, don’t forget pet food, leashes and/ or carriers. The last thing anyone wants to do when they are on the run from zombies or a tornado, is leave the furry ones behind. I read a story about a boxer (dog) that the family couldn’t find during one of the tornado rampages over the last week. The family survived in the basement, and by the grace of God the pup was back without a scratch the next day. But how aweful is that to know your dog is out there by himself during a tornado? I can’t stand the thought of this happening to any of my pets. So I will be stocking on the Beneful and along with the ramen noodles, and figuring out a backup plan for where they can stay if the zombie stuff really hits the fan. Thanks again CDC.

it is obvious to me the nay sayers did not read the entire post! I am proud of the CDC for their creativeness in getting out some very useful information in a format which draws people in and keeps their attention… Bravo!!!

    Wow. Zombies hey.

I love zombie movies and all that stuf, but when it realy happens no one wil be ready becous we neva faced anything like that before.

Remember that zombies won’t be the only thing that we gona have to warry about when the zombie invasion happens, there could be sycho’s to.

Let’s hope the CDC did this post for natural disasters and not something they did and trying to prepare everyone for their mistakes!!!!!

I have been planning my own course of action since I saw Night of the Living Dead years ago and it scared the beejezus out of me. Your list missed good running shoes, cell phone, lighter, keep your vehicle in good working order (never less than half a tank of gas ever) and make sure to bring the pets! Last thing we need is zombie Fido or Kitty….pet carriers, water, food, blanket for them too.

i would like to suggest that you use the cheat codes. you can find them on any gamer site

Sorry to say this but all you guys are either gonna die or be completely unprepared when the apocalypse comes. None of you have any idea what you are talking about. Most of you are just gonna go to the nearest gun store NEWS FLASH all you need are these three books (The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks, The Zombie Combat Manual by Roger MA, U.S. Army Zombie Combat Skills by The Department Of The Army) and either a safe place to survive in or a plan of how you can get to a safe place to survive.

first do something good with tax dallors and second consult with a zombie person like me. you could put stay in/on a safe place like a roof with zombies or flooding. since you are vainly trying to compare a zombie outbreak with natural disasters. Do something more productive with your time and our tax dallors.

    Are these people actually SERIOUS?!
I mean aside from the motto that “fear sells” and trying to push their “zombie survival kit”, does anyone REALLY believe this spill?
Just when you think they can’t sink any lower, THEY DO..
Geez, they tought us in the Army that some of these symptoms actually CAN be caused by a nuclear bomb/radiation, but a “zombie apocalypse”? c’mon!

    Great job guys!
I´m from Brazil, I was wondering… A zombie apocalypse, would be very good for the world, because whould be a chance to we back to a zero point.

Anything creative enough to get people thinking about disaster planning is money well spent. I’ve responded to numerous disasters and am always shocked at how woefully unprepared folks were. I’ve also worked on many disaster preparedness projects and have witnessed the total apathy that the general public has about disaster planning. Congratuations CDC for thinking outside the box.

this isn’t wasting money. the cdc is putting a nice spin on emergency preperation for people. it sure got your attention though.

Time to dust off the crowbar and stock up on Spam. Not saying that the zombie apocalypse is going to happen but if it did, in a weird frightened sort of way, I’d be excited.

I KNOW PEOPLE THING THIS IS WIERD BUT I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU MY KIDS READ ABOUT THE ZOMBIE THING AND REALLY PAID ATTETION TO OUR FAMILY PLANS IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR A FUN WAY TO TEACK THEM

This is a fun and inventive way to get a new group involved in emergency preparedness. Great idea!

Great communications tool. A bit of humor to get people’s attention, but still sharing solid information. Congratulations to the CDC for coming up with a creative way to get some solid information out into the world and to start getting younger generations thinking about “preparedness” for an emergency. Congratulations on a unique and attention getting campaign.

This is NOT a waste of money!!!Excellent job guys!!! Way to get the word out on being prepared for a disaster. Thanks, my zombie plan and kit is in place and will forward this as well. KUDOS to the CDC!!!!!

I am retired from the Army and Current Army Civilian Employee and we have been preparing for the worst since I can remember. You got to be ready for anything, Zombies, Anthrax, terrorist. As for the the kit that CDC listed, too basic. Spend the money on quality flashlights, radios, medical kits. backpacks, tents, stoves, etc. When you look to purchasing equipment, ask yourself “Can I bet my life on this gear”. Speaking of Gear, you can have all the best equipment in the world, but if you don’t have a workable plan, it’s useless. Get ready now, tomorrow might be too late. (I also have bets on the Aliens will get you before the zombies do!)

I my self have a “Zombie Survival kit” and basic natural disaster kit in my home my zombie survival kit consists of non-perishable foods such as spaghetti o’s beans and that sort of stuff basic first aid kit and a more advance first aid kit about 6 gallons of water sleeping bags basic fire materials lighter matches fire steel and striker 3 knives a utility knife SOG knife and a day to day use pocket knife duct tape gasoline a generator and other basic tools such as hammer wrench etc my food is enough to last for 6 months mostly being cooked by a camping stove my fortified location is my basement 7 foot thick walls 5 foot think floor all concrete it takes a wooden door and a steel door to get in plus a flight of stairs and the steel door is locked by three dead bolts and a chain

I watched the show “the walking” dead last weekend with a friend by the way it was pretty fun you guys should check it out .

I would suggest chain mail. Zombies can’t bite through chain mail, they only have teeth. I could go on as I have thought quite a bit about zombie apocalypses happening but. You know. I don’t want to.

I note that the zombies don’t eat each other.
How about some make-up so you can look like a zombie?
No need for a gun or bat to “make your escape”.
    Escape to where?
We are all going to die anyway.
May as well go out happy.

When there is no more room in hell, the dead shell walk the earth. I can see that the first ones to turn are the same ones that think that it’s a waste of money to do what it takes to get people to get prepared for emergencies.

Yeah the CDC can joke about a Zombie out break, but they can’t do anything about the rise of the machines! Terminator, minus the time travel is way more possible than a Zombie attack, so tell me what the CDC is going to do about that. Oh don’t get me wrong liberalism is proof of Zombies, but get real!

Hi, I live in Australia and we don’t really have a CDC or anything like that here, let alone one based anywhere near where I live but my dad has this huge old Nissan Datson Patrol which is basically a truck and is absolutely perfect for a zombie invasion because it has seats that we put in the back, is the most durable thing around, seats about 7, 9 if your pushing it and 14 if you utilize the floor space and it is just plain awesome. My friends and I have this whole zombie invasion evasion plan sorted out and I can reach all the pedals of the car at 5’2″ tall and being the shortest, we should be all good :)

I am about to forward the url to all my friends but I think that it great that a government body somewhere on earth is finally starting to take the threat of a zombie invasion seriously because I seriously hate scary movies and a zombie invasion would be the most terrifying thing on the planet!… Ta! 😛

Nice to see that a government organization that has one of the most serious of jobs, can show that their people and have some fun once in a while. And the preparedness kit they describe really is a good emergency preparedness kit in general. Good job!

PS – on the other hand though: Is there something they know that we don’t? :-)

How could the CDC have missed the impact of AMC’s The Walking Dead, which is set in Atlanta (CDC’s home)? Some scenes involved the CDC.

I’ve been ready for the Zombie Apocalypse for years. It will happen hopefully not in our life time though. It even says in the bible that the dead will rise from there graves. So if the CDC is backing it up along with bible it has to be true. The best place to start you preperation is the nearest army surplus store, they will have every thing you need. Make sure that everyone in caravan/Family,Friends knows how to drive a big rig or a big old school bus. Next stop a super walmart and take all that you need remember don’t be greedy there will be others that need rations. But if push comes to shove you and your own come first. Then you’ll need a home depot gather as much would ,sheet metal, batteries, flash lights tools, generators, flood lights, pvc, coper, metal pipeing and concrete. Then hold up in an industrial like wherehouse structure too prepare for the jurney but don’t hold up to long .I complety left this out sorry your going to need to hit up a gas station right after taking your school bus/rig.

Your supply list is very good and has helped me with my plan. My plan is to round up about 20 people head to Wal-mart baricade evry entrance with shelfs and anything else heavy. Make a farm on the roof for an unlimeded supply od food and use weapons from the hunting section and finally use large buckets/ bens to catch rain water to drink. If anyone else has any ideas how do make my plan better pleas let me know.

1 more thing to all these ppl saying its a waste of money, you never now wat could happen with all these new diseises going around and bio warfare and stuff so stuff it thank you CDC even tho i kno yall could have put moore stupp for the safty kit

even if the CDC did help they would need military support so shouldnt the military also be prepard for this as well?

What a great way to get younger generations to pay attention to the importance of emergency preparedness! Federal funding well spent. Cudos to all involved.

why/how would the CDC conduct an investigation for the infection? and how will the zombies be are they like old school zombies (slow, brainless) or new schoool (fast, slowly gaining knowledge/memories)? will animals be a part of their food chain? will zombies have an urge for our flesh or brains? where will the infection start? I NEED ANSWERS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!

Chris (20 Jun 11 at 843 pm ET)
you need to watch more movies man too many people die in places like wal-mart yeah it’s ok to drop in and get supplies but that’s it you need to find a more secure location and make sure you can fortify

This is genius, if you want to educate the under 30 crowd about emergency preparedness this will do it! Genius!!

I was pretty entertained by this, until I wondered how many tax dollars were wasted in the preparation of this article. I envision a project manager, a task force, dry-erase boards, spreadsheets… awesome use of government time and taxpayer funds!

i have prepared ive found a wwII fallout shelter stocked it with extra food ammo and supplies and first aid cousns in the air force got a humvee and a conected riot proof garage above the shelter it houses 14 below with free space and 10 above saftley with animal food also a ventalation shaft and water purification installed lavratories and hygine equipment riot gear and non perisable food with a renewable water source and a wind turbine and gas and bike powered generators i 20 people can survive here for 10 years or more also with extra upstars storage mabey even longer.

the infection has got to be flown in – i expect we will need cages at airports – this will be one of the answers for curing the world wide financial crisis – greece has a long history of zombies gong back 100s of years – they can lead the world in detection and surveillance!!!

imagine if terrorists used zombies as a form of bio-warfare. we’d be screwed unless we all had one of these kits. SO GO MAKE ONE! I DON’T NEED YOUR ZOMBIE BUTT TRYING TO EAT ME!

Thanks for you’re comment Ron. We hope you enjoyed the article and understand the importance of being prepared for any emergency, especially real ones like hurricanes, floods, or tornados.

In response to your comment, we actually didn’t spend any additional money on this campaign. We used existing staff, resources, and communication channels. We are really proud of the number of people we reached on a shoestring budget.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more from Public Health Matters!

Wow, i love how the CDC trys to down play the fact that tere are Zombies. I am sure they are a bi product of some government testing gone wrong.

A GOOD (Get Out Of Dodge) bag is a must have at all times. This is a 48 hour survival kit listed in this article, and contains everything you MUST have to survive 48 hours on foot. Make one in a large backpacking bag and keep it in your garage. I include a lightweight tent with mine :)

i believe ,in a real long term disaster there will be the unprepared persons, evil persons, injured or infected persons.desperation is a motivation to kill for comfort.one should prepare for real monsters.you read about them everyday in the papers.police only act after a crime, too late for the dead.

well i guess that the cdc dont read the news but 2 real zombie attacks 1 oklahoma and 1 new orleans …sad part is that it was caused by drugs ……….meth

This is absolutely an EPIC post! Definitely sharing. My parents thought I was crazy fro reading “The Zombie Survival Guide” by Max Brooks. Thinking I am totally insane for even considering a Zombie Apocalypse as a possibility. Hey Man.. I would rather be prepared. If it doesn’t hapen, great! If it does, I’m prepared. And guess who will be calling me once zombies are knocking down their door. That’s right my parents. And just with this post goes to show, it’s possible. Even the CDC thinks so. Thanks so much CDC! For showing the judgemental unbelievers, it is possible for a Zombie Infestation.

Listen people. This is about DISASTER preparedness. For all of you morons who are complaining that the government is wasting money on this, please read it. This is about natural disasters. They are using the zombie angle to get people reading. If people prepare for a zombie outbreak and, oh I don’t know, a FLOOD occurs, guess what?, they have an emergency kit!!!!!!!!!!! I’m not a an of the current administration but KUDOS to you good folks at the CDC. Don’t let some narrow minded people stop you from your good work!!!

Just substitute bird flu for zombie apocalypse and this is a very good article. I for one have never gone to a CDC page and read anything except travel advisories until this, so it captured my interest. The bird flu of 1918 (aka Spanish flu) killed more people than WWI, so it is still a real danger. Thank you CDC for still looking out for us.

    Nice little posting, however:
Most likely if there was a Zombie outbreak you are looking more towards Night of the living dead, Shaun of the Dead and Last of the living Zombies, they would be slow moving because of muscle deterioration and loss of a lot of mental capacity including movement.
So IF there ever was a zombie outbreak, rather than going to a “shellter” or “camp” where IF the infected did get inside, they would most likely cause an outbreak inside, it’s actually best to wait inside a place you are familiar with, that is safe for at least the first two weeks, because there would be no blood circulation eventually the zombies bodies would have an advance level of decomposition and start to deteriorate which would effect their movement more and cause them to be much slower, which would be easier to deal with. Now, in the event it’s a natural disaster, fallow all the things CDC has said, if it’s a zombie outbreak … Do your research =)

What if there were to be a virus spread genetically that activated in the 10th year or any year of life, so nobody could prepare for it?

    We’d be screwed.

I think this is a very COST EFFECTIVE way of communicating emergency preparedness! Kudos!

To everyone complaining about WASTED GOVERNMENT MONEY, how else would you suggest the CDC get basic emergency preparedness info out to the public? When was the last time you got so many hits on your blog? If a fraction of the hipsters who check out this page actually put together emergency kits, and a fraction of them actually have a reason to use them, that’s still lives saved and maybe a few less people requiring expensive emergency assistance.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of TAX DOLLARS SAVED (and also lives saved, if that matters at all).

BIG THANKS to everyone working in the field of public health!

This is frieken BEAUTIFUL, i got teary eyed when i read it. Hilarious. very good way to get disaster info out there. Good job CDC.

You have got to be kidding me. Really! And we can’t even help those who’s homes are being taken away by hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. No one knows when the end of time will be. An all powerful being would never let the little guy know when the final day is coming. Why would He let you prepare. You might as well sit and suffer thinking you are going to be tortured by zombies and waste you money in the resession on your zombie kit because your zombies will be your family, friends and neighbors coming to kill, steal and distroy what you do have after the rapture does come and the anti-christ is the one controlling everything left in the world. What you eat, do, say, buy. What a crock! Blah

Don’t you mean vaccine zombies??? Don’t you people have someone to go inject a bunch of toxins into?… oh but that would be one way to start a zombie apocolypse… especially since you have identified the virus. I am sure you people just suck!

Amazing, just before finding this post I had made a game out of making a survival kit with the family. The one we had need to be updated and refreshed. The kids loved the post. Thanx for the humor but for the real world common sense.

very clever how you named the article zombies so people would read it even though it is all about hurricanes. but all the same i have my zombie survival kit in my bacement

The CDC shouldn’t just focus on an investigation or quarantine in the event of any epidemic or bio-hazard situation because many people will lose faith in the government when they aren’t evacuated. Evacuation in any bio-hazard situation should be immediate.

aaahhh !. :O this is so awesome . My friend wants to be a proffesional zombie killer when she grows up . ! (:

ZOMBIES WOULD NEVER HAPPEN, think about the human body, since zombies are dead, they have no heart beat, no blood or oxygen is going to the brain, how would the brain function…why would have to shot the zombie in the head and destroy the brain, the brain is already destroyed. a zombie brain would be a puddle of goo and if there was some how a way for zombies to still live after the brain shut down, you could simply hide out for a year, the bodies would fall apart…if that don’t work, move to the yukon, the zombies would never make it, they would be frozen soild….If a zombie bite a polar bear and it becomes a zombpolbear then i guess your …

Anyone who wants a great training course for themselves and their family shoot us an email. Doesn’t matter if you’re preparing for zombies or economic collapse, you need to start preparing now.

If ever I have heard a reason to arm all the citizens of the USA this would be the reason.

The CDC is working on an vaccine to innoculate select “important” people when this outbreak happens. Ask yourself why they would need an vaccine if there was no virus? And why was the vaccine not mentioned in this article?

Well they made the zombie virus and they are working on the vaccine in a top secret lab but the scientists have not been successful yet. So there will not be a zombie outbreak until they have the vaccine.

    Don’t say you weren’t warned.

For all you people out there talking about how we are wasting our tax money on talking about zombies- live a little! The CDC obviously isn’t serious about the zombies, they want to bring attention to the real problem- emergency (such as earthquakes and tornados) awareness. And for all you idiots out there freaking out about how there really will be an apocolypse- get a life. Seriously lay off, if you wanna be prepared then cool but stop stuffing your opinions down the throat of others. This is coming from a 16 year old girl, and I make more sense than all of you paranoid people. Thanks.

wait wait wait…. the government is gonna try to handle this situation???? oh crap…. well… WE’RE BONED!!!!!

Brilliant campaign. Definitely reaching a segment of the population that would otherwise not EVER care to read anything like this . Brilliant.

I would love to know how many people have actually read this post that would not have bothered with a normal post…
Finally the CDC is providing to the level of a missed audience…

Do you know how many times I have had to explain and interpret emergency warnings to functionally illiterate individuals? The only problem with this post is that there is going to be SOMEONE SOMEWHERE who is going to believe that The X-files have discovered the Zombie plot is real and comming our way …

[#289 June 26, 2011 at 7:47 pm ET – Inexistent User :What if there were to be a virus spread genetically that activated in the 10th year or any year of life, so nobody could prepare for it?*****]

*****I actually think it is there we just are not paying attention to it yet. Ignorance will be the leveler of the playing field.

my comment is still waiting modernation… is this conformed enough? Or are you going to deny me this comment also?

“The Zombie Survival Guide” by Max Brooks. It is complete protection from the living dead.
    Prepare now……..

Slick PR campaign to catch peoples attention! I’d say the CDC just educated a host of unsuspecting twentysomethings searching “Nazi Apocalypse” on Google.

This is awesome! my buddies and i have talked about this happening for years now and we have our plan near perfected for what we’ll do if a catastrophe like this happens. all the other survival kit stuff should be a “no brainer” to most people. on the zombie side of things me and my team have our community protected. thanks CDC keep up the good work!

For all you people who think this is a waste of money…..get over it! You never know what will happen and it did not cost a lot of money to put this page up. And if there is a zombie outbreak you will probably get eaten first.

yeah this is cool thanks cdc but i think the government should quit messing with stuff so this dont happen

HEY!! wanna check good way to prepares yourself to zombies invasion? Go chec the animes Highschool of The Dead and the TV show( dont know if it was canceled) The Walking Dead.
Learn something from them and use it in case of this happens…
P.S: Not joking u should rlly check tht out

I cannot believe that you the CDC would actually post an emergency prepardness plan for what is assume a social myth “Zombies”. Where is the proof of this virus. This decreases one faith in the validity in the CDC’s scientific research.

Extremely pleased with this post. What an awesome idea for informing the public what to do in case of an emergency, in such a fun and delightful manner. A spoonful of sugar always helps the medicine go down. Sheer marketing genius! I will be posting this on facebook, I think alot of my friends will get a kick out of it. You should really make a printable (.pdf) poster, this would be great for my cubicle :) the [header] graphic artwork is just great!

    :) :) :)

zombies are no worry they would most likely be to slow the epidemic would end as quick as it started

    1. find a blunt object
    2. ration your food
    3. find high ground
    4. learn how to grow your own food
    5. learn how to clean your water
    6. get a mountain bike and oozz for your tires
( they go where cars and trucks cant)
    7. dont try and save anyone unless u really cant let them die
    8. keep going
    9. remember what your fighting for
    10. keep a change of socks and a second pair of clothes with u

This was a brilliant idea. I’m making an emergency kit today and do I remember to look for the CDC site? No. Do I remember the article about Zombie Apocalypse? YES!

ha me and my friends strted talking about what we would do if this ever happend. we would stockpile food

for those complaining about there tax dollars being wasted cuz they believe its imposibble ur a idiot cdc did a great job on this and i dont believe they wasted a ton of cash to write a simple article on solanum virus i believe warning the public of potential saftey hazards is important including this one u must always be prepared even in this instance they would not post it if it is not a potential threat and while im running from u cuz ur a flesh eating freak that cant take advice i’ll be laughing at ur ignorance

With Obama’s issued warning on Tuesday when he said social security payments and veterans’ checks, among other payments, could be at risk if negotiators don’t reach a deal to raise the debt limit above $14.3 trillion by Aug. 2., We could indeed be facing a “Zombie Apocalypse.” Think of it, without necessary funds needed to sustain food, medicines, & shelter the number of people who would be in the streets, homeless, jobless, sick, hungry, crazed.

Brilliant and entertaining way to bring attention to such an important issue. Nice job! And a shoutout to my fellow Zombie Response Team members!

Is this a joke? Do you Americans really beleave in this? 😀
And you guys wonder why no body takes you serious!
    Greetings from Europe

If a zombir bites you on the arm, can you cut off your limb and thus be saved from the infection ?

Im sorry. Zombies aren’t real they are like dinosaurs, They lived and died, or they are just a myth. But wonderful report IF it ever happened.

I love it.. It made me look harder and I usually don’t read the comments. For those that are upset that preparedness is being address this way… GET OVER IT… this is a great way to get to people, especially young people, to really look at what they need. If you look around you see Zombies all over the place… at least talk about the impending zombie apocalypse. Good job!!

This was a very well thought out idea. What a fun way to get people thinking about real disaster preparation. I can see by some of the comments that are negative – some people did not read it before replying. First of all, the CDC is not funded by your tax dollars people but if it was you should be proud. Think of all the people who will read this thinking it’s a joke then realize they do need to be more prepared for natural disasters or anything that could come up. Young people even, the age group mostly joking about zombies all the time could use this information to save their life if there was an earthquake or I don’t know maybe if a nuclear power plant started having meltdowns… Thank you for this blog, very well done.

What happens to the rescue plan if all the CDC folks become Zombies?

With what is going on in DC these days, it appears that there are already a bunch of Zombies in Congress and the White House….so a take over of the CDC is not too much of a stretch.

@ Heinrich Holler — When the zombies come for you–don’t expect the USA to save you.

Please put a disclaimer on this article that this is not true. My son suffers from paranoia and is extremely disturbed that what is written is actually real. I don’t mind the fun of such an article, but it can be very disturbing for those who suffer from this disorder.

Please amend this article to show that is fake.

    Regards,
    Glenn

You have got to be kidding me…. Zombies??? Really?? Wow… I never thought I’d see the day. This is ridiculous! The CDC has been watching way too many cheesy old horror flicks. Give me a break.

all the people complaining about our “tax dollars” writing this article, need to lighten up. All the advice in this article can be applied to ANY diasater situation. Thats why they didnt include weapons in their “survival kit”.

Now back to zombies, I would also include some kevlar gloves(and even sleeves if you can afford them) so you dont have to worry about getting bit on the hand.

my plan, to melt car parts and other metal, and combined with a thick rubber suit, create something like spartan or ODST type armor like from the halo series, as id like to see a zombie bite though an arm covered in a couple pounds of metal

Great work CDC. We especially commned the idea of evacuees agreeing on meeting places.

The reason they don’t have get a gun on the list is because this is actually a list of things to do in the event of a real emergency ie natural disaster or terrorist attack. They don’t want armed scared americans roaming the streets or showing up to red cross sites with rifles and shot guns lol.

this could make purple monkey’s and talking elephants cause my giraffe is already mocking me at my window!!
my life would be more fun then it already is cause my cousin is chuck Norris.

Really, people? Lighten up with your retard comments like “umg guyz this iz wazting r munnyz”. I mean really, since when does it cost ANY money WHATSOEVER to post on a blog? Never. It’s idiot tightwads like you that make this country hell for the rest of us. Lighten up.

This is wonderful. Now if only we could find a fun and innovative way to stress the importance of reading comprehension, so that the poor souls who have been upset by this blog post will have some hope of someday getting this joke.

Or any joke for that matter. Or if we could just get them to stop bragging about how they don’t understand what’s going on around them, as if abject stupidity was the noblest of virtues…

I AM IMPRESSED NO T WITH CDC BUT WITH US AND HOW WE HAVE DEVELOPED A ZOMBIE ALERT ? DONT GET ME WRONG I LOVE ZOMBIE FLICKS AND IM TERRYFIED THAT THIS MIGTH REALLY HAPPEN SO IM PREPARING AT THIS MOMENT MY ZOMBIE KIT . YOU HAVE CONVINCED ME .

this doesnt make any sense y would u have the cops or fire department or something like thts # they would have probabaly have left town ive thought about wat i would do if a zombie apocalypse happened for years so if it really happened i would be ready and i no it
its very complicated plan but not really

Way to go CDC ! Thumbs up for the marketing genius!

For the negative complainers, the CDC really got their bang for the buck on this twist. It is the same basic disaster preparedness information that the CDC has been making available to the public, but with some tongue in cheek humor added to make it a little more enjoyable and get the public attention. In trying to get people to read the information available, this zombie twist hit the jackpot.

In all seriousness, the preparedness information contained is valid useful information. Read it. Understand it. Use it. You will not be sorry.

Note: I am in no way connected with the CDC.

Awesome post! Zombie apocalypse? We can handle it!

The trailer for the second season of The Walking Dead just premiered at Comic-Con and I KNOW all you zombie-enthusiasts will eat this up!
Can’t WAIT for the new season!!!

The emergency preparedness kits should also be useful during the next Rapture scheduled for this October and the cataclysm associated with the end of the Mayan calendar in December 2012. Start preparing now before it’s too late!

i really think that if a zombie apocalypse does happen i know that would be one crazy thing to really get your mind around it and react to it, when it comes to something that crazy i really think there is chemicals that could be launch into out atmosphere and gives the population some kind of weird sickness and such thing could cause the humanity population to actually turn out to be like zombies running around waiting to get a piece of your flesh and rip it apart but if does happen i hope that the C.D.C does act fast to something so critical and crazy as something like this i would survive to the fullest

when i heard about this i flipped out and made an entire emergency kit and i carry it around every were i know all about zombies so i know good true movies are zombie land.

Sanitation is an important factor to keep in mind since public water supplies might not be operational during an extended power outage. If water pumps can’t move the water our indoor plumbing quickly stops working.

It would be real nice if you would educate people on Morgellons disease as I have had to bear alot of the brunt for your lack of education and non disclosure of the “studies” performed at Kaiser permanente’. Thousands are suffering and this really does not humor me.
You may also want to stop asking people for their psychiatric problem in the Oils spill also. I wrote to Joe Biden and your head of the CDC sent a tepid response to me that there is no danger in the spill and no danger in the dispersants. I think you might want to have a chat with the people because we are slammed with blood levels of people with hexane, benzine, mercury, 2 and 3 Methylpentane above the 95 Quintile, Issocatane and now Cesium 99 this is nothing to be ignored. People are very ill all over the coast of the Gulf and this is not National News.
I guess these workers and humans are delusional like Morgellons patients.
The lack of help from the CDC I find appaling and OSHA should have made BP have respirators manditory.
This is a horrific lack of oversight and compassion on the part of the CDC and yes while the world is awash in Environmental Armegeddon you put out an article that you think is cute.
Thanks, there is a real appocolypse coming if we dump one more chemical in that gulf or spray one more barrel of CORE-EXIT in that Gulf.

Bicycles would be essential for getting around fossil fuels would definitely run out in an Apocalypse situation. Motorcycle jump suits would provide decent armor as they can stay intact after an accident it would be hard for teeth or nails to get through. Brick walls would make a decent defense. Definitely invest in solar panels for electricity main power grids would probably go down.

ok listen me not cdc i have the idea to learn how to survive in front of this apocalyps …… PLAY BLACK OPS IN THE SOMBIE MODE ….. HAHAHA XD

    TO: CDC
    REF: ZOMBIE PREPAREDNESS

I THOUGHT THE ARTICLE ON ZOMBIE PREPAREDNESS WAS VERY INTERESTING, AND IF I WOULDNT ALREADY HAVE AN EMERGENCY KIT AVAILABLE, THE ARTICLE WOULD HAVE MADE ME MAKE ONE. IF THIS IS WHAT IT TAKES TO GET PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THEIR SAFETY THAN IM ALL FOR IT. DONT WORRY, IM NOT ONE WHOSE WORRIED SO MUCH ABOUT THE COST AS MUCH AS THE RESULT. GOOD JOB!

We’re in the midst of the biggest budget crisis experienced by our nation in our lifetimes, and this is how public servants chose to spend their time (and by extension our tax resources?)

I wonder how many GS-15s it took to put this together.

I can’t wait to tell the Washington Post about this.

This is an old article. I read it a couple months ago. I have seen this apocalypse coming. They will be here soon. Is it 2012? I do not know at all. All I know is that this has happened before, but it wasn’t an apocalypse.

I agree with Dylan. Dylan, remember, it has to be flexible, and it shouldn’t have any holes that zombies can get their hands into!

i will be going to wall mart you can close thoes big metal gates they have canned goode generators firearms and ammunition batteries meds camping and cooking supplies ( grills) climb to the roof after it is locked down all doors and have 360 degree security you could last there untill the water ran out ( bottles)

I find this article interesting and i find that the people who do find this article helpful to be understanding of being prepared for whatever happens and find those who don’t like this article to please stop adding rude comments. You are closed minded and ignorant of the possibilities that could happen, nothing is written in stone and its aggravating when people post rude remark, if you don’t like it then quit reading it and go search for basic safety precautions for disasters within your area.
“Expect the best, prepare for the worst”

This was a well thought out way to get people prepared for natural disasters. I know many people walk around care free thinking nothing can happen and everything will be provided by the government, well we seen how that worked out after a few hurricanes.

Having worked in law enforcement for over 16 years I can tell you most people are not prepared for even a small disaster and rely on the police and fire to take care of everything.

Each citizen should take a little self responsibility and put a kit together with all the items listed by the CDC and Ready.gov. That way if a family should have to shelter in place until help arrives they can be prepared and sustain some safety and health and not tax the system should help be slow to get there.

Zombies are a good example to get everyone prepared for a disaster, it makes the idea of being prepared fun and get your entire family involved. I applaud the CDC for using this idea to get American’s prepared should a disaster befall their community. Thanks CDC for a wonderful way to get people ready for any emergency.

I’m sure there were several critics that did not like the idea that voiced their opinion on this forum. But it surely got their attention and likely may save their life one day for making them read something they probably never would have.

    Good Job!

    Matt,

Thanks for reading and for your blog comment. As we have mentioned previously this blog incurred no additional costs to the government. We used existing staff and resources and feel that it has completed our mission of informing the public about important public health preparedness messages.

    Thanks!

What a fun, creative way to teach kids (and Adults) about emergency response kits! My boys now have taken interest in our 72 hr kit, where it is, and what is in it. Government money well spent!

To all of you First Responders, National Guard, and Federal Military,

Remember that your “zombie” emergency plan for your family should not be contingent upon you. You are going to be up to your neck in “undead”, infected, or more than likely just plain stupid people that refused to listen to warnings.

Unfortunately that means that your family will be on their own.

It sucks but its the life that we have chosen.

SO, make sure your kit is sorted out, your family knows where it is and how to use it, and you have a plan to communicate with them and/or find them if the situation becomes so dire that you choose to abandon your post screaming “every man for themselves”!

Most important is to teach them how to survive without you and the importance of proper mindset. If you are the Alpha male of your house hold, then most likely you have shielded them, provided for them, and protected them their whole lives. Its time to teach them to protect and provide for themselves.

You are going to have a horrible job of holding society together and preventing anarchy, the least that you can do for yourself is make sure you KNOW that your family is going to be OK, so you can focus on your job and your responsibilities to the greater good.

i say, bring em, this country is in a ressesition and zompoc would be the perfect thing to 1: population controll(survival of the prepared) 2: open up ALOT of job opprotunities after the outbreak and 3: zompoc would be a hell of alot more fun than sitting around at a 9-5 job or online doing job apps for jobs that dont exist by the time they are seen anyway

Love this so much!!! Its about time !!! We should be prepared for any and all emergencies!!

You people that commet on things such as this with negative comments are just pathetic. In the opening paragraph it says this is for “example”. This blog is to help prepare for other emegencies, to give oneself an idea of what to do/get during any emergency.

Thanks, the “Zombie” angle got even our adult children interested in Dad’s “obsession” to be prepared for hurricanes, power outage glitches, pandemic influenza of huge proportions and even ZOMBIE’s which was not on my radar until now!

Amusing angle that worked as intended! Thanks….from an obsessively protective dad and granddad!

    A. Did our tax dollars go to this tripe?
    B. This all comes from the organization that for years has been at the forefront of taking our 2d amendment rights from us.

Zombie defense can only be accomplished through application of accurately directed objects via kinetic energy as a function of the ejection of lead from a metal tube caused by a gaseous explosion.

“live perpetrators often require 2 to the chest, one to the head, guaranteed to make them dead” Zombies however require “one to the head just to ensure they’re really dead”

I’m currently writing my own zombie survival strategy and will post a link here when finished. I agree with the saferooms, preferably having air vents, plants, heavy doors and no windows. However, there needs to be a service that allows areas to coordinate saferooms so that there is always a saferoom within a 2-3 hour walking distance of another saferoom. Also, large, strategic bridges should be destroyed and ferries be offered in place so that zombies would be better isolated to land masses. That’s just my 2 cents though.

Wow, 372 posts! This blog article must have been read by thousands of people after it went viral. I’ll bet a “normal” blog article on disaster preparedness would not have achieved even one tenth as many posts and reads. Kudos to the genius who dreamed this up!

As someone who has been preparing (prepping) for a long time and has CERT training I think this is great!

For those of you who think this is real/ stupid/ a waste of money , you all will clearly be the first ones to turn zombie :P.

This isn’t political folks ,both liberals and right wingers are in the prepper movement so get over it.

Great job getting young people to take preparedness seriously CDC!

It’s a joke people , laugh every few years, it should release your sphincter and make you hate a little less.

This is fantastic, being that I typically put out FEMA/CDC pamplets on preparing for any and all emergency issues for the people who come into my office…(somewhere not too far north of NYC itself) I applaud this. Its a wonderful way of getting kids and adults to think about how to protect life and property.

LMAO……But then ya never know, this might be exactly the best way to warn people if there REALLY is a Zombie bug!

I am pretty much prepared because I listen to The Survival Podcast, The Urban Survival Podcast, and the Chip Monk Family Preparedness Podcast. They have helped me be ready for all eventualities. Mostly thanks to The Survival Podcast and Jack Spirko. Thanks Jack! And thanks to my Dad who raised me with a survival mindset.

Ive been reading a lot about this subject lately and i learned a little more from reading this, thanks for the post.

Bravo! well done to whoever came up with this as a way to get people to read about being prepared. (and an even bigger ‘well done’ to their supervisor who had the guts to green-light the idea)

BEAUTIFUL site and great info! BRAVO to the CDC for making disaster preparedness relevant to those who might never really “get” the urgent need to always be prepared for a natural or (worse) man-made disaster that lasts longer than a few hours. The closest thing I came to a “disaster” was when the power went out (and stayed out) for over 5 1/2 days in Cincinnati in early 2008 due to unexpectedly and extremely high winds (thank you Hurricane Ike). I was woefully unprepared, and so were all of the businesses, urgent cares and everything else in my area; the local hospitals’ power didn’t return until over 3 days afterward.

I never made that mistake again, and have quite the emergency preparedness kit, though it does lack a few things mentioned in the article (thx, CDC!), esp. re: the pet essentials. Couching your info in a “zombie apocalypse” scenario only makes it that much more fun (and relevant) to me. I’m not a lazy teen or millennial slacker or paranoid gamer-basement dweller – I’m a middle-aged attorney in a law enforcement agency (and my supervisors were the ones who sent me the link to this!). In fact, we might be putting it in our next “health and safety” e-newsletter.

Put it this way – no one ever died from too much good information! When the zombies are at your door, you’ll wish you’d paid more attention to this and less to American-friggin’-Idol! And don’t forget – Cardio, cardio, cardio (w/the occasional double-tap!).

Keep up the fabulous work, CDC!! You’ve made my week; and I’m so gratified to find many compadres that think about these things as much as I do!! Where’s a zombie response team I can join?? :o)

i don’t wish for an event of zombies to happen but ive built as good a kit to survive as a 13 year old could
and iv read zombie survival guide 3 times taking notes etc.
i have a map of my state, city, country, surrounding states, safe zones, pawn shops ,super stores ,gun shops, military surplus stores, even a map of my own neighborhood that I drew my self i don’t know if that will keep me alive or not but if happens ill be ready and if i don’t survive than whom ever finds my gear surely will if they are smart enough to work my gear but if they weren’t than they wouldn’t be alive to find it in the fist place .

BRAVO, CDC!!! Way to make emergency preparedness fun AND relevant to a population that likely would not think about such an important thing (me being one of them, and I’m a veteran and an attorney for a law enforcement agency!). As a species humans tend to be a “reactive,” rather than “proactive,” bunch. Therefore, they are often caught unawares when a disaster (natural or worse, man-made) strikes.

I was in Cincinnati, OH in 2008 when the winds from Hurricane Ike knocked out power for hundreds of square miles; in my case, over 5 1/2 days, and I wasn’t rural, I was in a heavily populated suburb of downtown. EVERYONE, businesses, hospitals, fire/police stations and myself, were caught completely off-guard. It doesn’t sound like a long time, but it truly feels like forever when you can’t get even the most basic of essentials, like water and canned food, b/c all the businesses were shuttered until at least 3 days into the outage (obviously, the hospitals and emergency stations were 1st priority, then businesses, then everyone else). You couldn’t drive the roads for the first 2 days at least (sparking wires and downed branches were littering the streets). Needless to say, the traffic llights didn’t work, so you were really taking your life in your hands to venture out in a vehicle.

It definitely scared me into awareness of how important it is to have the basics on hand, and in mass quantities, b/c you never know just how long you’ll be w/o the basics, like electric power. We take so much for granted. And zombies (my favorite horror monster) are a potent reminder of the effects of societal breakdown – replace zombie w/”terrorist” and hopefully, you get my point. What if you can’t get thru to 911? What if law and order completely collapsed? What if those societal buttresses were suddenly (maybe permanently?) yanked out from under you? Obviously, the CDC can only do its’ particular function in all this, but you see where I’m going. You MUST be prepared for something like this, b/c there’s very little to stop it from happening.

So thank you, CDC, you did a marvelous job of shocking the conscience of quite a few people, myself included. Keep up the fabulous work.

PS – Never forget to double-tap!!

Great article with very interesting information. You might want to follow up to this topic!?!

You forgot to include an axe. Seriously. Not for zombies. For hacking through the attic to get up to the roof. A lot of flood victims drown because the water rises to the attic, and they can’t get up to the roof.

I must say Resident Evil was one of my best. It has a better plot than most and it more futuristic.

I would also recommend adding a couple of “friends” to your emergency rations. Preferably some that you don’t particulary like so you can trip them when the zombies start chasing you, giving you extra time to get away.

Great website.
Jesus Castillo Como Subir la Masa Muscular

We are sitting here in the store and wonder what in the hell was wrong with these slobber, sloth like fellow. Then he pushes back out onto the street and a another customer says “that dude was a zombie!”. He gave us this site address and told us to read up on the zombie possibility and what to do if they are here. After the last customer yesterday, I believe that the “if” is actually an “is”. The zombie are here and are now populating the planet.

Thanks for the post. I always enjoy reading your blog.

    Keep’em coming more frequently.

    Best!

Interesting views forsure, yeah doesn’t seem to far fetched either with all the crazy stuff they can mix up now a days in a science lab and implement it in a new energy drink or something of that nature. If that happens i plan on staying in my summer house with all my supplies.

I hope the president is aware of this situation and is forming a committee to look into a possible vaccine to prevent this from happening. But just incase I got my kit already made.

I’m not sure about you but if such a thing were to happen, more often than not a mass riot would break out before anyone got their heads straight on what to do to survive such a disaster. And if this were to happen, most government officials would treat this as someone causing a violent riot for odds reasons or even for terrorism before openly accepting that zombies are attacking. I love this article and mean no offense but this is how I would see us reacting.

Well…A zombie apocalypse is a particular scenario of apocalyptic literature that customarily has a science fiction/horror rationale. In a zombie apocalypse, a widespread rise of zombies hostile to human life engages in a general assault on civilization. In short great post…really amazing…Thank you so much for sharing this amazing info…

i think that we all should take zombies seriously because if yo have built a zsk (zombie, survival, kit) you can use it for any situations

To any and all idiots (likely all teabaggers) complaining about “wasted money”, think for a minute, if you’re not too brain damaged. Then again, that goes without saying when talking about such idiots.

How much money did this page actually cost to produce? Let’s be pessimistic and say five hours, plus the cost of gathering pictures and the time it takes to post it. How much is that? About $300? $500 total? That’s a pittance.

Compare that to the waste of “programs” like “abstinence only sex education” for which hundreds of millions of dollars was spent. The product of that “program” was increased STD transmission and increased teen pregnancy.

Will this “zombie” warning cause disease? Cause mass panic? Cause an increase in violence and lawlessness? No, none of the above. The biggest “cost” of this page is the cost in data transfer, the number of times it has been viewed by the public.

But if the public are reading it, then that was the point: getting people to think about disaster preparation. At the price it cost, it was a bargain.

I have always been a woman who is not scared of anything.. not even death.. but I AM TERRIFIED of Zombies.. and not like.. I will cower in the corner while they eat me alive terrified.. Im terrified where if i see you have been bit.. Sorry but your gonna have to be dealt with, no need to sit and ponder it. I have always had a fear of a zombie Apocalypse.. Religiously and Scientifically it is possible.. I remembered hearing, when there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth. Not to mention the end of the world apparently coming October 28, 2011. I am pretty sure with cataclysmic events will cause the release of biochemical virus’s to become air borne as well as in our water supplies.. Basically I am saying I am trying to find others in my area who are preparing and who are willing to voyage out together to look for an infection free zone. Which I feel from movies they have hinted us that Alaska might be one of those virus free areas… Anyone who lives in south florida or is willing to make their way down here to help if the event ever should happen please feel free to email me at doordie954@hotmail.com I am planning a trip to stock up and start making individual backpacks with survival kits as well as survival protection per individual. =] ~Angel

i loved this .i came across it looking for zombie info for a art project i am working on with a group at IUOMA ,Zombie Encyclopedia Project, whose goal is to create a freely available
PDF art-book for download by the general public by Halloween 2011.

i havn’t got to the survival kit ,but i did spead the last 4 hours reading the comments .some people were right on giving you kudos, for getting our youth active. a lot of comments from the future caretakes of this planet. and the people who think you were wasting our tax dallors probably did get as many hits as you did and will keep getting hits, just because it’s a good subject. thanks loved it

This is amazing, it could be realistic, but with all these new flu’s and these super bugs going around…who know what could happen….right on…M

I just checked this out after the earthquake and hurricane. I love this blog entry. It’s great! Thanks for making disaster preparedness actually fun to read about! :-)

To be honest if anybody really believes in zombies they need to check in with a mental institution I mean
I watch my share of horror films but I don’t actually believe it would happen in real life
It’s all a bunch of entertaining nonsense. That’s just my opinion. Peace out!!!

Zombie Apocalypse is coming to Arbutus on Oct 30, 2011. We are having carnival games, food, music, raffles and a zombie walk through town. it is all to support the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) and the Arbutus VFD.

    Find us on Facebook at:
    Zombie Apocalypse on Facebook

Stock up with big jars of cheap wine. I lived thru Northridge earthquake and afterwards, without power, without gas, without water, for almost a week. Suddenly there is literally nothing to do. So, just post yourself on a coach, listen to battery operated radio, if you have one, or read a book (hey, remember? there is something like that!) and sip your burgundy. I guarantee, you’ll discover you never tried better wine than this one.

I’d add holly water against zombies.

Just when I thought nothing would surprise me…. ZOMBIES on CDC! Awesome.
We only wish that in Argentina we had something like that…

Well In my conuntry at schoool they always teach us what we should take in an emergency situation, here is what I would take:
    * Large Size Backpack (Nylon)
    * Bright Bar, 12 Hour (Green)
    * Plastic whistle with cord
    * First Aid Kit 37 Pieces
    * Duct tape (Duct Tape), 50 yards (45.72 m)
    * Tool 14 in 1 pocket
    * Triple Opener, 1 pair
    * Radio AM / FM, Flashlight, Alarm
    * C-size batteries x2
    * Solar Blanket
    * Food Rations of 2400 Calories
    * With Water Sachets x 10
    * Emergency Poncho
    * N95 respirator
    * Biohazard Bag x2
    * Work Gloves, Leather Palm
    * Waterproof Matches, Box of 50
    * Candles Emergency Slow Burn (pack of 5)

Thank you so much for such an informative post you have here. You have certainly put so much efort in making your blogs. Keep it up!

Chains, you have got to have chains to grip the pavement. After you run over a few hundred the tires start to get slippery with zombie slop. A good set of chains will solve this problem.

For all of you that think this page is nonsense, you are obviously missing the point. It’s a fun and humorous way to get peoples attention to make a safety kit in case of emergencies. I would have never read this post if it didn’t involve zombies. But who knows… Anything is possible…even perhaps zombies :-p

CDC knows that this will be cool and attractive to many young people. It is a clever and cunning way to sell messages. A typical sales trick!

If I get any zombies, I’ll just sick my horses on them, they are tough! I never really thought of this topic till now. Better lock up!

When the AMC TV show The Walking Dead returns in October, I’m sure there will be more pointers on how to deal with zombies.

It’s just a matter of time before someone makes zombie harnesses or roll cages and puts them to work going round and round with a live chicken in a cage attached over their heads so they can turn a wheel attached to a device like a grinding mill or small electrical generator to recharge car batteries in the trendy hybrid green cars. I know I would. The NO WORK, NO FOOD rule should apply to them as well.

    Woo Hoo! Zombie powered cars.

You can always get supplies suggested above, but ofcourse, you won’t get far with alot of weapons!!! start collecting now!

I have a question for all you Nay sayers, All who believe this is a waste of “OUR” tax dollars… Do you say the same thing bout the government wasting “OUR” tax dollars on preparing for Alien invasions?? Cause you believe there is no such thing and believe we are alone in this Universe? then we really need to be spending “OUR” tax dollars on the ignorance in this country… Believe that anything is possible. KUDOS to CDC.

i’m not saying zombies are real, but in the world we live in today, it seemslike i see them on the 3 train everyday in new york… but really, with all the dieseses out there, chemical wepons, and scientest trying to act like god and clone people, you never know

Truth is when there is one, all of us posting saying we know what to do, atleast 50% of us will probably already be infected. I plan on locking all the doors boarding up the windows, then barricading my garage, easy escape in a car :), Id probably end up at a outdoor sports store like many of us looking for a decent weapon and a group of people to work and travel with.

Zombie are coming back for Halloween 2011 in few days now. Watch behind your doors. Thanks for the apocalypse zombie subject.

If a zombie apocolypse were to occur just remember to sever the brainstem of the zombie by any means necessary, or just smack the crap out of its head. To add to the kit maybe steel toed boots in case you are out of weapons and there are none in sight. Or just run away because zombies are very slow.

Also reading the comments made me realize how stupid society is. And whoever said zombies are fake better check their research. We have the capabilities of reanimating the dead and the CDC is the ones with the crap to do so…. all of this could be a hoax but they actually have had reports of zombies in haiti from about 35 years ago. The people were dead and they were reanimated and walking around. They were not the stereotypical zombie that we see in the movies but they were documented as zombies. Love or hate this post and think i am a nut job if you want… or look it up and find out for yourself.

A face mask is always good to keep the virus from spreading through the blood and landing in your mouth in case of close combat situations,

In a parallel universe this blog would be extremely hempful. Until the day that Zombie’é take over I know now what to prepare for!!

Where there is the posibility of a Zombie outbreak it is unlikely that it will happen in the manner we think it will. Preparedness is a great aspect and in many ways this article brought to light a fun way to get people to prepare for any sort of disaster. I am glad it was written the way it was and I am disgusted with people complaining over tax payers money. I mean seriously, I pay taxes, I support learning even if it is through unorthdox means.

We were watching deadliest warrior, and saw the vampires VS zombies and looked up a guide in case of a zombie apocolypse. Very helpful. If you guys could make one for vampires that would be good, start working on it.

I understand the Zombie metaphor for emergency preparedness, I think a lot of people posting here do not. Emergency preparedness is not really a joking matter. This is really just a “what would you do if society collapsed and police/emergency responders could not respond” scenario, based on movies and pop culture.
What scares me more than the dead coming back to life is the threat of “brain-dead” people preparing for “zombies”, or worse, voting.

Halloween Campaign! CDC zombie stickers and info with the treats!!

Actually, I just read the book “The Great Influenza,” saw the movie “Contagion” with Paltrow & Damon), and watched the PBS Influenza 1918 episode online. What can I say? I got curious. I would take zombies over influenza any day. It was like Voldemort – by 1919 it was that “which should not be named.”

So educate the unwashed masses about pandemics/epidemics with costumes, treats, themes… and post the CDC badge on your facebook page for Halloween….

    Zombies
1918 Influenza (Where Edward became a Vampire)
Contagion quarenteen (for a more modern approach)

I’m ready for zombies, I’m 18 now and I just got a motorcycle, I got my car license in a cheap van, a 1994 toyota hiace. I no longer use the van now so I welded on some steel screens over the the windows and added a high power multi frequency radio and television receiver and radio transmitter luckily I have some home made katanas if things go bad. Also in the van there is a water purification system, a homemade extra large fuel emergency fuel tank. I n the van I used to have big subwoofers, requiring big amps requiring a big power supply, I ripped the subs and other sound gear out, leaving the power supply, 4 high output alternators and 10 deep cycle batteries. The power supply in that van used to power a sound system loud enough to be in a concert, but it’s more than enough for a couple radios.

Well, call it over kill, but this was more of a fun back yard project than a zombie apocalypse, although if there ever is this kind of crisis, I will be well prepared, but for now imm putting the subwoofers back in

What must I do if in zombie I trust, but my parents not.
I can’t make my medkit and protection, ’cause they think it doesn’t exist

If it does happenlogicly it would be more like 28u days later, not dead ppl coming back noway.
An the disease work likely be a form of rabies tht has mutated an took on the appearance of H5N1 (avian) flu with the way it rapidly spreads in humans.
so let’s say u are immune to it, go u, all I gotta say is hope. U ain’t outa shape cause running is who u are now, yes my fellow americans I hope u take this to heart we need PT( physical training) cause let’s face it we’ve been a spoiled country for years obesity is the number one health risk an weu talk bout it like its polio.PUT THE FORK DOWN HIT THE TREADMILL AN IF UR LUCKY U MIGHT NOT GET LEFT BEHIND. Thnx for reading

    P. S.
Survival kits will keep u alive if u think practical wen packing.
Always remember noise and light disapline.
    Use battle buddies(buddy system )
be tactical about everything u do.
I can’t stress this enough, in a high stress situation don’t flip out an go screaming to the floor
No matter if its a fire fight, or u missed placed ur keys just remember
SLOW IS SMOOTH SMOOTH IS FAST. If u ever use tht Ull understand.

: this is for the social peterist tht r complainin bout the cdcs concern for a zombie apocalypse.
do u really believe ur taxes went up because of simple informational website? U can stop speaking now. I am in the US army infantry and if I was a conservative miser I would complain about sum of the stuff they pay us to do, like play football for hours, or take naps all on ur tax dollaar$. 😉 plus its not them taking it serious its to prove they r really trying to make sure the covered EVERYTHING so the next time whiny ppl wanna blame sumone an get sumthing for nothing like they don’t already have welfare it wont be them getting forced into paying unlawful restitution

This is just a way to make emergency preparation interesting! And I like it! But in the event a real zombie invasion would occur, I highly doubt it has time for government bureaucracy! Most likely during a zombie invasion martial law will be dictated so it would be best to have an abundance of supplies and protection in your home, and I would advise not leaving it until the local authorities escort you to safety!

wow:) the one fear that i’v had for the longest time. any time i say any thing on it people look at me like im crazy and now thire all preparing to. lol thats crazy

this is cool i am a true believer i kind of hope this happens zombies a scary and awsome and i will have to write this stuff down i made a list of things that would be helpfull
Canned foods, rope, 1 or 2 tents, wood, nails, backpacks, sleeping bags, weapons of some kind, water, compass (2 just in case one gets lost), rope saw, solar-powered flashlights, water fillter, canteens,lighters/fire starters, medical kit, duck tape, soap, and other bathroom items.
    f.y.i im 14 😀

If ur lookin for protection get a shark bite proof suit they sell them cheap online and if they can protect u from a shark ull be safe from zombie bites and it’s lite weight unlike chain mail which is heavy as hell so u can maneuver easily and get away with out getting infected by a lucky scratch

I love this! Just too funny! With Halloween coming soon its time to get ready! And if you don’t want to be one, why not dress like one and hide within the group as the go around doing whatever crazy stuff zombies do?

But all joking aside I think the comment by voice and reason:
I understand the Zombie metaphor for emergency preparedness, I think a lot of people posting here do not. Emergency preparedness is not really a joking matter. This is really just a “what would you do if society collapsed and police/emergency responders could not respond” scenario, based on movies and pop culture.
What scares me more than the dead coming back to life is the threat of “brain-dead” people preparing for “zombies”, or worse, voting.

    Now they got it right..

Some people need to lighten up! At least it got you to the site where you can read more information that you MIGHT NEED TO KNOW. Take a deep breath and relax…..

I think this is a great posting. Fun and still informative about what to do in general emergencies. A great way to connect with the younger crowd. This is actually good stuff.

I love how prople cant see this for what it is: straightforward preparedness info. The word “zombie” is simply to describe the starving criminal hoards who are going to be looting during a major disaster.

By the way, I disagree with the fact that defensive (or offensive…) weapons are completely ignored. Maybe the CDC thinks its out of the scope of a minimalist preparednedd article, but I disagree.

I think a full body condom is appropriate for bashing zombie skullz with aluminum and cricket bats, thus protecting you from evil zombie bodily fluids.

And………..if everyone else is a zombie, who will be around to say that necrophilia is still unacceptable………ha ha (Dr. Evil laugh)

This is great. Finally, a creative way to get us (at least me) to read about preparing for a disaster. The real zombies are the poor souls who complain that this is a waster of tax money and miss the whole point of the article. Imagine them when a real disaster hits…”give me your water…”.

I love that the threat of zombies will probably enlighten more people to prepare for dangerous circumstances than the threat of a hurricane or flood. Oh cdc, brilliant. So when something bad does happen and you’re thinking “oh no, what do I do!?” you can be like… “well… I do have my zombie appocolypse bag. I GUESS I could use this.” You’ve all just been conned into being prepared for actual threats ^O^

Some of these comments are so dumb; I’d consider their authors “The Walking Dead.” What should my kit include to survive them?

Is there something you guys aren’t telling us? Seems like there have been a lot of zombie articles from the CDC and News stations lately lol..

Great stuff! Can these products be used in response to rabid teabaggers? I see then wandering through the streets droning on about the end of the world all the time.

    Keep up the good work!

…The real reason for the CDC posting this is because the same tools that will help you survive a zombie outbreak will help you survive any natural disaster, epidemic or otherwise Sh!t Hit The Fan senatio (SHTFs). Food, water, utility knife, radio, flashlight fire starting equipment ect. Still pretty humorous however.

I have three backpacks(one for each member of my family) in my garage already packed with re-chargeable lights, radios, various survival equipment, MRE’s, first aid, and a host of other essentials including maps with route plans. When preparing this, I remembered to plan for my dog. Dont forget man’s best friend when escaping from that throng of zombies.

There are destination and route plans for contigencies such as wildfires, tsunami, social unrest, and radiological/biological accidents. Dont forget your Iodine pills and masks. Knowing a bit of history about your area is always good, who knows when that abandoned mine will become handy shelter in a bind.

Well i mean better safe than sorry but getting prepared for a zombie invasion is borderline crazy, can’t they be focused on things like cancer and other REAL diseases, not fears caused by Hollywood

The zombies will come!!! Be prepared, have a vehicle with plenty of fuel first off. Keep it near your safety zone which you should go to FIRST thing you learn of the zombies reaching your area. Have a group of at least 5 people that you trust(with your life prefreferably) and stay in the safe zone within the area of your safe zone with minimum contact with the outside, only have 1 access point for maximum safety(make it hard to get to without help from your group). Those are the basics of what you need to do when the infection hits. If you think im crazy… Good, that just means I will survive longer, and who knows. Maybe I’ll kill the zombie you :)

Hahaha…this is so cool. I never expected a gov related blog, i.e. the CDC, to put up a post on zombies. Any way when you run out of bullets, is to get a scary zombie costume and pretend to be one of them. And if you do that, you have to remember to cover yourself with decaying zombie juice so that they smell your human blood…..lol

For those who comment negatively about this post, not to worry… you guys are exempt. Zombies only go after brains.

I am sure that I work with zombies regularly….They are certainly the walking dead as they enter in the morning, and do not perk up until around 5:00pm as they exit…

As much as I would love to agree with the idea of “blending in with the zombies” as stated by Zombie Man in post 492. I would strongly suggest to not cover yourself with zombie juice as this will be teaming with the virus and therefore you might as well off yourself because – well you know what will happen!!!

What an excellent way to get people to prepare for real-life emergency scenarios! Whoever thought up this post should get a bonus. It’s a great use of humor to get a point across. Of course, some people have missed the point; they’re probably the same ones who spend months planning their Halloween fancy dress costumes but expect other people to rescue them.

This is great! Each year, I give a little speech to the local boy scout troop on emergency preparedness and living in Florida, it is a reality more often than not. This web-site helped get the speech off to a rollicking start and turned it into an interactive learning opportunity. These adolescent males are more likely to put something together in their homes if they can tell their friends and families they are preparing for a Zombie attack. CDC rocks!

I have been observing that some people on my steet seem peeked and are lumbering about. Is this the beggining of the end?

the sad part is a zombie (aka reanimated corpse) is a very reasonable idea scientists have been toying with the idea of reanimating dead tissue for a loooong time and have gotten as far as using electrical impulses to do this temporarily of course but if something like rabies mutated out of control it is very possible since rabies does affect and takes control of the brain and use things such as the classic bite to spread the contagion so yes a zombetic like outbreak is a rational idea.

Thank gawd we support such important research with our tax dollars. . .though i will start carrying a bat in the trunk of my car.

    @Crashemt

I had to link your idiotic comment btw “crashemt”

Seriously? Who cares how much it cost the CDC to makes this, I’m sure it wasn’t much and it was as lighthearted, fun way to bring attention to the underlying theme of a disaster preparedness kit. Good lord, are your reading comprehension skills that low? They must be. Anyways, if you were a “huge zombie fan” like you claim, then you wouldn’t have left such a nitpicking comment. Grow up.

Great job CDC! Very few people would normally read about disaster preparedness from a government website. Those who would are likely prepared anyway. You just got the message through to a much larger cross-section of the population. Very smart.

Is the general public that stale stating about tax payers dollars wasted for this? I thought this to be a very creative way to use our tax dollars to alert people on how to prepare for a disaster or emergency. Also how the CDC works to combat these situations. Sure they may be using one of the biggest hypes in media right now, but regardless it gets the message out. The person who wrote it was already getting paid for what they do and they did a fine job if their aim was to get a message across about real situations using a popular (false for now) one. I’d appriciate it if more government agencies could be this creative. I’ll be purchasing my zombie task force shirt to help donate some money to help out for real disasters.

So this kinda gets me thinking. Maybre the gov. does have some kinda virus that can make someone into something like a zombie..i am a little concerned now

lol doesnt this post tell us all something, it amuses me that even our center for disease control has taken measures to prepare us for something they say they know nothing about

Dude if u get bitten by one of them ur done…. if ur bitten don’t go to ur kit ask someone to kill u… cuz thats how they spread fast.. and dont trie to communicate to zombies they r just a virus controlling the nerves like a puppet.. and they feed allllll day and alll night

This is a great way to get youths interested and involved in preparing for an emergency. At least they can identify an emergengy with zombie-apocalypse and act accordingly.

This is a great way to get youths interested and involved in preparing for an emergency. At least they can identify an emergengy with zombie-apocalypse and act and react accordingly if and when the time comes.

I love how they left out some kind of weapon for self defense or protection against the Zombie hord. ie a ton of guns and ammo. Anyone who forgets that important part of the Z plan will be the bait and food for the zombies so everyone else can escape :) Thanks for taking care of that part of my plan for me CDC. Now i dont have to sacrafice one of my friends so i can escape.

I dont think a zombie apocalypse is anywhere near our futures, however the the use of the “zombie apocalypse” to grab the attention of its readers to in a sense prepare them for any natural disaster was a beyond brilliant idea. Just saying.

I do not believe that any of you guys actually think zombies exist.
Emergency preparedness is not really true, better get ready for the end of the world because we are not taking care of it.

The people who are complaining that this is a waste of government money need to go back and reread the article.

I’m all for eliminating government waste, but this does not really qualify as waste. (At least no more of a waste than normal government spending)

If you read the article carefully you will notice that it is cleverly disguised message general disaster preparedness. See references to hurricanes, fires, tornados etc.

    Come on people!

awesomee a zombie apocalypse even iff i dont belive in it its going to be awesome i knowee my ruless and imma survivor for that cant wait but if they run we’ll be messed up you knoww imma get my ninja sworddsss and im 13 yrs old no liess. i go to deady middle school im an 8th grader and im preparedd 😀

I think that this a great way for the CDC to reach out to wider variety of people on how to prepare themselves for a real emergency. An I also think that some of the people that have left comments about the waste of their on working on this information are just making themselves sound stupid. It is quite obvious from the way that different types of disasters are stressed in the article that the CDC is, in fact, just using this spin to get people prepared for common emergencies. Maybe you people who thought more about the whole zombie aspect should take more time to actually read and understand the information.

Howdy I am so excited I found your website, I really found you by accident, while I was searching on Digg for something else, Anyways I am here now and would just like to say cheers for a remarkable post and a all round interesting blog (I also love the theme/design), I donit have time to read through it all at the moment but I have saved it and also added your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read a lot more, Please do keep up the excellent work.

Wow…For all of you who say this can’t happen…better think again… Let’s all watch what happens as our citizens continue rising up against this government, protesting inciting civil disobedience and such… They wont beat us or shoot us..they have other plans… Just my theory…Turning us into zombies doesn’t sound so far fetched to me!

While I agree with the people who are concerned about government waste, I disagree with the target. This post cost no more than – a very liberal estimate – thousands of dollars. If you are concerned with cutting government waste look no further than your elected Congressman.

People take everything so literally! You nay sayers are going on the version of zombies that are portrayed in the movies when everyone knows that movies are an overblown version of actual events or details or things that either can or have happened. I think a “zombie apocalypse” is possible but it wouldn’t be actual re animated corpses walking around eating people but crazy, starving, violent, mentally and motor function impaired people who maybe have a leprosy like condition is not that far fetched and the high communicability rate in other pandemics are already a reality. Don’t be naive to how real a situation like this may be… especially given the radiation that is currently in our atmosphere.

    ~Another Zombie Warrior~

God, I hope this is just a parody and not really real. For real, CDC? Some of your writters watch too much Resident Evil.

It’s a pity you don’t have a donate button! I’d without a doubt donate to this fantastic blog! I guess for now i’ll settle for book-marking and adding your RSS feed to my Google account. I look forward to new updates and will talk about this site with my Facebook group. Chat soon!

ok here is an up to date post.im not here to play games or tell jokes .inffection/outbreak has already strarted in brooklyn new york and its really happening right now as we speak cdc must find a way to control this outbreak before it get wores asap.

the fact of a zombie out break is irrational …that fact the a zombie is a bag of rotting flesh would attract flies maggots animals ect. and they would eventually rot down to noting with no muscles to move and thus no way to feed and spread unless there was a fresh group of 100 zombies made weekly

Zombies are already here; they’re called sheeple, and many of them are present commenting on this very article.

    Awesome blog!!!

Great way to get some attention to the CDC, what you do, and how you help people in times of crisis. Seriously, you PR person deserves a raise off of this one. Now if we can just get the Obama Administration to support it…think Vote Zombie Zombie Democrat/Zombie Republican 2012…would make for a pretty awesome shirt or campaign button/bumper sticker

Great to see the CDC finally taking this issue more seriously. If you want to really outlive the zombies, however, you are going to need backpacking equipment, and it better be if you expect to outrun the zombies.

The last thing you want to do is to leave your town. Don’t leave home unless you have to, pick a place that you know will be safe near by. Everyone else will try to leave town, so that will cause traffic jams, and will leave you all like sitting ducks. Basically waiting to get eaten. Don’t go where the food is (humans.)

YES!!! One Day Somethings Gonna Happen, And we have the CDC to thank for prepping us!!!! I Belive it def can happen, What about Dec. 12 2012??? lol Its Possible!!! But i dnt belive the CDC will be there for us all the way though…its one man for himself right?

I am very happy we have Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse, and as another person wrote I believe we need :

Preparedness 101 : Mass ninja attack
Preparedness 101 : Godzilla comes to USA
    Preparedness 101 : Hostile UFO’s
Preparedness 101 : Mass bunny insertion

But I feel these fall under the military not CDC.

    Great job CDC!

I think my manager is a zombie. He smells bad and has a blank look in his eyes like nobody is home. What should I do?

I CAN’T WAIT for the conspiracy theorists to weigh in on this one! WE’RE DOOOOOOooomed! Love it…

I think some of you are missing the point here. The CDC isn’t admitting that the zombie apocalypse is now a real threat, they’re using it as a way to get people to unknowingly prepare for disasters that are more likely to occur. Hence the word “real” being italicized in the article. With all the crazy diseases out there, I’m sure there’s something that might cause a zombie-like outbreak, but it’s obvious that people would rather prepare for something that will never happen over things that happen around them daily.

Great information you got here. I’ve been reading about this topic for one week now for my papers in school and thank God I found it here in your blog. I had a great time reading this.

I saw epsode 6 of the show the walking dead (3) weeks ago and ive been having nightmares ever since this just made it worse

I know this is way late but,I wanna read the zombie comic and all I get is a pdf file in scripts when i just wanna read it!what do I do!??!

I feel that the zombie appocolypse will happen not by a dieses that kill you then brings you brings you back to life but in fact attacts the nervous system killing brain cells and erasing every sense of being civil. it will bring out the inner savage, so pretty much making people go crazy.

No, James. I think the article is wasteful, having read it.

The “undead” are entertainment, disaster preparedness is not- or at least shouldn’t be. I understand the idea of the article by Khan was to be fun but I just don’t believe that we should blur a serious viral outbreak with Hollywood horror movies when giving real emergency guidelines to people who really need it. Should Ali Khan do the next one on foreign vampires, and how to survive being attacked likened to an Ebola virus outbreak in a third world country with risk of it spreading here?

See? One subject is fun, the other just isn’t.

This is awesome but they obviously aren’t serious they are just trying to find a more enticing way to prepare people for a more imminent disaster lol

Just to let all of you non-believers out there know. This will happen! That is exactly why the US Government has posted this website! If you do not believe you will perish! So get ready while you can and at least be prepared for the worst.

    BELIEVE IT!!!

I’ve been to the CDC site MAYBE once before (not my first choice of a web search, right?). But curiosity got the best of me and I had to see what CDC has to say of this dreadful matter. LO AND BEHOLD I’ve picked up some more tips on safety/disaster preparedness, and that I can also point out this link to loved ones and friends !! All wrapped in an entertaining package! It’s about educating ourselves… –MISSION ACCOMPLISHED CDC–

zombies go for flesh, not brains. its a well known fact for any person educated in the world of zombie knowledge. therefore you i.e. is false.

How You Know that’s really going to happen, I’m A Christian Person So I Don’t Believe in that fake stuff

Is it really going to happen? Is it even possible? Some say No, but as the above article mentions i rekon its coming so to have your survival kit ready makes sense.

You should also learn survival skills for most major disasters.

It is especially poiniant here in Thailand at the moment where the flooding just seems to get worse and worse and the rain never seems to stop.

We have all ready ran out of most essentials like bread and water is now getting pretty expensive.

Anyway thanks for the tips, and keep an eye on Bangkok, we might need you very, very soon!

    thanks

    Mark

For all of you complaining about how much this cost YOU, get your panties out of your crack. It’s a funny way of getting you prepared for ANY type of natural or unnatural disaster. The Government wastes tax payer money on much “dumber” things. The one’s complaining will be the FIRST ones crying about the Government’s lack of response if such a crisis did develop. Also, this ISN’T so far fetched as they DO have the biological means of turning this into a reality…do a little research. Bravo CDC!

think you guys are really taking this to serious and if it does happen all of us will die nobodys going to live you cant be the resident evil girl

They sleep during the day. They awaken at night. They are among us, and yet not quite fully human. It’s a … ZOMBIE! No, wait, .. it’s a BABY! … Huh?

A Baby’s First Book of Zombies is a title for young children and their parents which playfully explores the parallels between babies and zombies and the process by which parents slowly become zombies during their first year of parenthood. By alternating between scenes which are very silly and scenes that are just a little bit creepy, young children can begin to learn the joys of incorporating monsters into their imaginary worlds.

Come visit our Kickstarter campaign at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1002297760/a-babys-first-book-of-zombies!

personally id invest in a couple well made machetes and a hunting crossbow with plenty of bolts.

I’m glad I found your blog and this information, it is a good idea to have a place planned for where the family will meet just in case something happens. I will be mentioning this to the family soon. Thx.

i love this Hurry CDC release sumthing so this can happen already im ready to fight some damn zombies! lol

sean. i do believe you are ignorant to this matter. Of course it wont be “zombies” but a virus similar to the creature. There are already rage viruses in 3rd world countries cause innocent citizens to become infected and filled with hunger and rage going ravenous on the village. there have been reports. this is a potent threat and i do think people should take this serious. with the technology we have today and all the research our government does not tell is is going on there is possiblity that a virus has already been constructed. no im not one of those paranoid freaks. im a 17 year old teenager who lives in a tiny ass town called deltona. i do however have a fascination with these creatures. i have researched this for the past 2 years and have found evidence that a “zombie apocalypse” is possible. wether or not you believe there is no reason you shouldnt prepare for this just in case. like great mind have said before i shall say it again. “Nothing is impossible” we do have scientists already looking into these “zombies”. not just in america but in japan, korea, and even russia. again. this is a potent threat that i believe should be taken serious.
(and if you want to survive, get a damn boat.) zombies cant swim T.T

oh btw. if you want a real guide on how to survive this potent threat. buy world war z. its worth the money. trust me

I thought this was hilarious and creative what a better way to get some very needed info out to people who would otherwise never read it. Its sad to think that people believe in Zombies and would be concerned about an imaginary threat as opposed to a real one like a Hurricaine or a terror attack. Good job CDC

Here are a few more scenarios you might consider:
    – rampaging genetically re-created T-Rex (a la Jurassic Park)
    – Extraterrestrial invasion
    – planetary collision
    – worldwide financial collapse caused by incompetent greedy investment banks (forget it; too unlikely)
    – nuclear war caused by blithering idiot in White House using wrong phone to order pizza
    – Tea Party presidential candidate winning election
    – Eton College alumnus becoming British Prime Minister (Oh no, already happened, aaaaiiiiiieeeeee!!!!!!)

I thought the comic was entertaining and educational. I have printed the preparedness guide for future reference. I feel that the CDC is always looking out for all of us and our families.

Thank you for this helpful preparedness advice. I would like to suggest that it also pays to educate yourself about the best tactics to take ahead of time, so that in an emergency, when you have little time to think, you will make smart choices.

A Zombie doesn’t need to eat your brains to kill you, If he carries a deadly infectious virus that’s what will eat you alive. But if you have to, destroy it’s brain and get running! (that’s the only way to kill a Zombie I hear) Believe it or not this is all news to me and I thank you for the Informative info!

We just watched Zombieland last week. Somebody was thinking when this approach was chosen! Great way to get the message across!

Congratulations for just earning yourselves a HUGE fanbase now. When you start needing more funding, I suggest you make a more comprehensive list for the Zombie Apocalypse. Trust me when I say that there are plenty of people willing to pay for that.

Zombie apocalypse, giant earth quake, a meteorite the size of the moon hitting earth, or however it is that the world is gonna end. Either way, all I know is that I’m gonna survive it, no matter how hard it will be, there is always a way. And I ain’t ready to die! I still have lots to do in my life. 😛

NBC nightly news mentioned this post in its broadcast yesterday. I doubted it at first, but it is true. OMG.

I think it is time that we see Zombies in the light of “they are (or were) people too” and initiate laws to protect the rights and dignity of Zombies. We must not let fear run amok and become haters of things we do not understand.

Oh please I do not think any of that from the zombies and the apocalypse. This is science fiction, and uqe humans have enough intelligence to sencivilidad and Morino anything other than this.

    Manuela Perez

I honestly do believe that there is/will be a new disease that will end up taking the human race away that servive the natural disasters. You think its funny. But have you heard of anyone getting sick for months straight? Thinking your over it but its not gone at all its just slowly going to get worse and you don’t know it. That is why humans are getting so violent more because they get angry over something so small you will kill the other person, not really biting them or anything but find something else to use. I believe that the zombies will be the devils creation to wipe out the rest of human race that worship him. That is just my theory/opinion. I don’t know what will happen when the world ends but I do know that I have so many friends who have horrible zombie dreams that seem so realistic and a lot of them have the same dreams together. I say be prepared for whatever, may never know what will happen or how it will happen. Just be prepared for the worst.

Is it true that the CIA, has intel that a certain govt. is working on bio-manipulation techniques for the mutation of existing diseases, in order to produce zombie like conditions in live subjects.

For those who are angered by this article because you think it’s a waste of taxpayer’s money, it’s not about a fictional zombie apocalypse. It’s about preparing for ANY emergency, fictional or not. This article seems to appeal to the younger generation and it shows them to prepare for anything, even if it is a zombie apocalypse. Imagine now how many people have accessed this article and read this? To some of our younger generation people, this could encourage us to have an Emergency kit, just because we would be ready for a zombie take over. Despite the fact that they made it to prepare for a zombie apocalypse, they’d still have an emergency kit right? Exactly…

All this talk about over population maybe the cdc needs to make a disease to wake up some Zombies. Think about it, sure would help stop all the useless murdering in the world. Plus all the crazy people in the world would get a chance to kill something without consequences or would that be called RE-KILLING. Oh well Good luck all

Ya know many ppl are mad about their tax dollars for this but 3 things are wrong with that. 1. The CDC addressed that in this article so one your dumb and didn’t read it. 2. This is a front to get geeks who know zombies are going to take over someday to read this so they make money and 3. and acctual zombie apocolips is acctually a very likely way for the world to end, more likly it will be an infection not zombies but rabies is the closest to zombies we have. 28 days later is the most realistic zombie movie out there, and yes i know it’s an infection movie but it’s the closest one to real zombies and most probable.

The survival kit really doesn’t cover zombies that much i noticed, it’s really a joke to them but maybe they really should take it more serious, if an outbreak happened, and i say outbreak not zombies, could be rabies or rage or any new virus mutation, maybe swine flue, then it would spread fast and cause chayos if the government or states didn’t step in on time, We should take this seriously cause it could end the world, if even 50% or even 30% of ppl who read it took it seriously it would be mission accomplished. Weapons will be needed…Good luck to all of you when the shit hits the fan. Be observant, aware, and always ready.

Awesome!!!! I always thought people should be aware of the possibility of a zombie apocalypse. BTW Bo …..don’t get ahead of yourself. It’s not exclusively about being prepare for zombies but being prepare for other “realistic” disasters.

Also remember money will be worth nothing! You need a safe blace with no vents! They will smell you! Also be quiet and if you have a battery opperated radio. get ear plugs and ALOT of batteries!Water, canned foods, including cannedf fruits! The CDC doesn’t seem to understand just how dumb the average person is. There are people who actually believe that there’s going to be a zombie apocalypse now.

I say if zombies strike is to start creating an underground safe house so you dont get eaten but if something more realistic happens then do what this web page has talked about. But also dont be all uptight and ready for disater to strike at any moment but to have it in mind and be ready. We no matter what happens will survive!!!!

I agree with Naomi. Underground safehouses are key. If you can’t secure a radio station, go underground!

This is zombies, not rabies, no irrational fear of water!

Thanks to the CDC for the preparedness guide!

Remember how important it is to Kill the zombies!

My suggestion for any type of disaster or preparing for zombies or a disease outbreak would be to first have a back pack setup with plenty of dry food, one of those water filtering bottles with extra filters and purification tablets as well as the other obvious stuff and a hand gun to defend what you have in the event that you need to bug out in a hurry. If you do have to bug out, get away from populated ares as far as you can. Second if you are in a good defendable location stay there and dig in for as long as you can. I live on the top floor of an apartment complex 3 stories up. one steel door coming in with an enclosed balcony, Easily defendable. Clean water, Food, and Self Defence should be your top priority.

Haha, we started collecting some supplies al ready, if there is a zombie apocalypse. The un zombified peoples real chance of survival depends on what kind of zombies they are, will they be able to think independently? Or will they be brain dead veggies? With they literally be walking dead, therefore having natural enemies like the cold, bugs, and animals? Or will they be humans with sickly skin and just cannibalistic, humans being able to spot hidden doors in the floor and work out problems? stuff like that..

Although i find it HIGHLY possible for a zombie attack to really happen, i think this post is nothing but a way to actually atract more people to the site and read what they need to do to get prepared for an actuall disaster like hurricanes and earthquakes, so by using something that many people have an intrest in like zombies, they can (not necsisarly trick them, because preparing for any disaster is something everybody should do) but just accumilate more people to the site so more people are prepared, because its evident that disastrs are happening all over the world more frequently. so i dont think they are taking the zombie apocalypse seriosly, i just think they are using it to make people better prepared for ACTUAL REAL DISASTERS THAT HAPPEN NOT JUST ONCE BUT EVERYDAY AROUND THE WORLD. so yeah reading this doesnt get me excited and tricked into thinking that this will really happen, because i see this post for what it really is.

For the last week I’ve actually took the whole possiblity of a rage virus being real. I think it should be taken more serious.” Like how do you kill a zombie” I guess I have to watch the movies to fnd that out.

Brilliant and much appreciated. Some clever people at the CDC have provided us with an exception to the rule that our government is populated exclusively by humorless automatons. As for the one or two commenters out of every fifty that disapprove: people who think that way are usually the least prepared and the first to be eaten.

Nice to see that there are some in our government that have both a brain and a sense of humor!

That was quite possibly the only way you could have gotten me to visit the CDC website and actually read an emergency preparedness blog!!

There is a sleeper type support cell in Mississippi if you live in the USA. We are prepared for anything, whether it’s Zombies or a National Invasion. Nothing and No one will take over Mississippi. In the event of an Emergency you may come here we will still be standing strong. Mississippi is a big state but we will have a base set up in Hernando and Booneville. We are currently scouting for four more cities, two in central and two in south Mississippi. If you know of an Average sized city that will be easy to find, I’m interested.

I love the fact that even the CDC has taken advantage of the Zombie Craze to get its message of preparedness out to the masses. Good job guys.

wow its really cool to see this movie the ZOMBIE i love watching movie when i get home. thank’s for sharing with us.

This is great. There are tons of other resources out there too. If you prepare for zombies, you are prepared for everything! My favorite site out there is ZETA – it prepares you in great details for zombies and more.

There are other sites out there too, but this one is funny. But at the same time, full of useful information.

For those who say a weapon should be included in the kit, in general disaster situations, (obviously you know the article is not actually about zombies as zombies are not real) having weapons can actually be more of a liability then a resource. First of all people need to be properly trained to use weapons or else they will kill friends and family members by mistake. Second of all possessing weapons could cause National Guards men to mistake you for a looter and get yourself shot. It’s better to just let the looters loot your house and wait until the National Guard arrives. If looters get what they want, they won’t harm you. Plus you can always replace your material possessions once the disaster is over and you have regained all your financial losses.

Again the basic survivor skills are presented as life saver in emergency situations. Interesting post, thanks :)

Its good CDC coverd this for other emergencies. My concern is that is the CDC trying to tell us something in one way but not telling us another way. is this other experiment gone bad that the government is covering up again

If you seriously thing the CDC just did this for giggles and that it’s a waste of your $ you need to go back to school. This is to hook ppl for EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS. Be it any type!

I have been longing for this day for decades!!!!! If the world were to be ending, then I pray we go out via Zombie Apoalypse!

I have learned something from reading your article today. I appreciate your presentation and knowledge on this subject. This has given me reason to consider the points you made here and I will be back.

A USAF Major told me of a USMC training ‘town’ where the ‘Walking Dead’ scenario is practiced for real. This ‘Major’ did the course, it’s real. So why is the Corps taking this scenario real enough to spend money on such a mock set up??!! Just read that scientist in the Netherlands have modified the Bird Flu……can we say STUPID!! In the event of such an outbreak causing a Walking Dead situation, large areas had better be just cordoned off with large, high fences. The USN had better deploy to sea ASAP and stay away from land, far away until air recon can verify a safe return destination.

Hello there. My visitors have been asking about this, do you mind if I re-print this on my blog? I will of course give full credit to this site, and I will link to you if you like. Thanks.

I think this is a great use of humor to get a serious point across. Great job guys. As an ex military guy, I always have some spare food and water in my house and a “bug out” bag ready to go. Everyone should have one. Whether its a flu outbreak, small pox, or earth quake…that few days of food and water could make the difference. Great job CDC….
and by the way…. the zombies are coming…oh yes they are….just not yet :-)

Also CDC….you may want to up your fuel supplies for your generators…we all saw what happened to your facility in the Walking Dead hahahahahaha

You will have to consider aspect inside an important challenge for one from all of the most beneficial blog sites for all of the net. I actually can suggest blogs.cdc.gov !

For all of you who did not read the entire article, it was not about a scenario with a zombie apocalypse, it was to get people to do something to prepare for a likely disaster that may face them. Also, if there really were a zombie apocalypse plan it would include a blunt object and some ranged weapons.

I think you guys should give a more realistic perspective on this, such as what would cause such a disease to spread? I think you should put up more valid information to back up what you have to say.

The most realistic depiction of a zombie apocalypse would be a scenario where a subject is infected with a rabies like pathogen, only much more fast acting and with a reduced mental function which makes the subject much more violent. The subject would also need a diminished capacity for pain and complete loss of higher brain function, or else the subject would not bite and attack others and the pathogen would not spread.
In this scenario depending on where you lived and where the infection originated would determine your survival strategy. The safest place to be in a zombie infestation is obviously an area with no zombies and where zombies would have trouble to get to. The place that makes the most sense to me would be an island big enough to sustain a family or small civilization. For instance if the zombie plague originated in the U.S. I would probably want to move to Australia, or at least that would be my first choice. However depending on how fast the infection spread they might shut down air travel, in which case I would try to find somewhere closer. Since I live in Canada, probably Vancouver Island.
Another strategy would be to go far enough north that zombies could not survive the year round cold. This would also work for the undead type zombie as they would freeze solid in the arctic and be unable to move. Also a bleeding half dead human wandering through the arctic would likely either fall into a crevasse or be eaten by polar bears….However that does leave the possibility of zombie polar bears which I don’t even want to think about.

I can see everyone needing living essentials…but food, water, and medical supplies practically grow on tree’s in most areas. I would be worrying about self-defense.

I do not mean to put the CDC’s help down, for their hearts are in the right place,
However, they should definitely put personal safety into the equation!
    :)

Good post. I’d been examining frequently this unique site using this program . pleased! Useful data especially the leftover component I keep this kind of data a great deal. I have been seeking this particular tips for decades. Kudos and finest involving fortune.

Seriously super entry to study on…! I’m really compelled with this post. Searching ahead for extra data.

WOW. I love this article. I don’t think zombies wil come any time soon if they do become real, but natural disasters always happen.

if a zombie outbreak were to happen, you guys at CDC will be suspect. lol no one is as stupid as you think they are. IF a natural outbreak were to occur, they would not last more than a week. The heat, the cold, all the elements will do FAR more harm than good. zombies lose muscle control due to a body that is no longer functioning to preserve itself. Now it would be more about rage zombies than regular zombies. Then we will definitely know that it was a manufactured plague

This is clever way to get people thinking about preparing for emergencies. I particularly liked the tricky little Zombie Apocalypse heading as an opportunity to grab the reader’s attention, threw in some pictures of zombie looking creatures to show a visual and capitalized on the article to take advantage of emergency preparedness tips for all emergencies. Since preparing for hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, fires etc. is virtually the same why not put a creative spin on the issue of making sure citizens are prepared for Zombies? I for one have now included an aluminum baseball bat to my emergency supply kit. Nice work!

i see this a possibly the start of the zombie apocalypse, why give out i guide now, i belive that there preparing us for the near futre, is there somthing the govermant isn’t telling us?

Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wished to say that I have truly enjoyed browsing your blog posts. In any case I will be subscribing to your rss feed and I hope you write again soon!

That is my first-time I have visited here. I found a lot of interesting information as part of your blog. From your tons of comments within your posts, I suppose Im one of many! continue the impressive work.

i don’t think many ppl realize this but the cdc isn’t actually taking zombies seriously, it’s just there joking way of grabbing our attention so they prepare us for a natural disaster. I don’t care what anyone says, a zombie apocolypse and a n atural disaster are two completely different scenarios and while they do require some of the same goods, like food and such, you won’t need a .22 during a natural disaster. And i have’t read all the somments but whoever said an aluminum bat is good for killing zombies is wrong, it’s bend quickly. duh.

ok so i just have one comment……TOTTALLY FREAKING WICKED DUDE!
ok well i have more than just one comment, hehe.
so what you should have on your supply list is a Zombie Bashing Stick. me and my friends are always talking about what it would me like if/when the zombie apocalypse happens.
once i read this i emediately showed it to my friends and we all agreed on how this post is going to help us when it does happen.
all of those movies like RESIDENT EVIL are all based on one fact: zombies are going to happen sooner or later.
and the cause is always the same: some jacked up scientist has tried to find a cure for cancer.
well guys, they have almost construcked a cure that has finally eliminated the deathly disease.
during november the medicine that was injected into 2,000 recipiants of cancer cured close to 1,000 of them.
the only side affect was that 50% of their bone tissue had to be taken in order to cure them.
now in “I am legend”, what year did they cure cancer? and what year did all the cured turn into mindless flesh eating zombies?
    thats right, 2012.
be prepared. the days of the zombie apocalypse are among us.
so those of you who dis the CDC’s post and on how you are wasting your tax money on this post, get a grip and actually pay attention to the
    signs around you.
for these days could be your last ones, and before you knoe it, you culd be the walking undead youselfs.

this was created on the basses of the one percent rule.

that rule states that if there is if an event has even a one percent chance of occurring then there must be a plan for its to deal with it.

this does means the government takes zombies as a real treat.

    POSSIBLE ZOMBIE CAUSAL AGENTS:
    (1) Alien (demonic or underground species [elmo kin]) possession / poisoning / viral…

    (2) PLANET-X related EMF discharges w/ pole-shift considerations. ( aluminum foil / tin-hat origin )

    (3) HAARP ?

Thanks for creating a health related article. You are included some photos it’s so nice.
    Thanks
    Zonalton Ford

I love horror movies. One of my most favorite movies is about Zombie. Thank you for this great writing about how to prepare for a real emergency for Zombie apocalypse.

The ONLY reason I came here was because I am watching QUARANTINE … scary movie about zombie outbreak sorta and they mention the CDC so i googled it and came here

Further up in the comments, there was mention of a need for information on medications and what happens when taken after they expire. I know that a study was done by the DOD on this, as they had/have a large stockpile of medication. Where would the public be able to find this type of information, as far as what drugs just lose their potency and which become dangerous. Also information on the best way to store medications for long term storage would be great information. I am thrilled to see that some government agencies view being prepared for emergencies is a good thing… Thanks for the inovative way to get this message out

Thanks for this. I love the fact that something so dry and seemingly boring can be turned into something that motivates me to start preparing. Tax dollars well spent!

Lol… I really hope people aren’t being serious about a zombie issue… I mean, I can imagine a disease of some type making people go crazy or something, but moving and possibly running without any blood flowing through the body and missing vital organs? I’d doubt it…

This article doesn’t mean the CDC takes the zombie thing seriously. The people saying “OMG waste of money-blah blah blah” need to read and pay attention a bit also… This is just saying to be prepared. Think about it… If you were to prepare for a zombie outbreak, you’d be ready for nearly everything right? Right…

As far as I knew, the CDC is suppose to spread awareness of natural disasters and so on and keep people prepared, and by posting this article they’ve brought quite a few people here that otherwise wouldn’t be, and otherwise wouldn’t be thinking about being prepared. They’ve done their job well with this, and it’s something I feel I can relate with rather than a bunch of monotone formal banter I’d fall asleep reading about. 😀

Since i don’t exactly see an edit button, I feel like ranting a bit more on here about it… A friend of mine showed me this acting all serious about it. Until I made him look it over again and notice the part

“You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a ‘real’ emergency.”

Having said “Real” would imply the statements before were to something “Not real”. Meaning, no… Zombies are not taken seriously in this article. Sure maybe something that makes people crazy, some other more realistic form of “zombies”. But true corpses… Nah, sorry Johnny lol.

This blog is a really great way to get people to think ahead. Remember to get a small chainsaw for sawing limbs in the middle of the road if you take backroads after hurricanes. Leave some gas in it for the zombies!!!

Lighten up people. It can’t have taken more than $15000 at most to make this comic and blog possible. If it’s making people think about emergency preparedness then it’s money well spent. It’s certainly better than having more unprepared people huddling around shelters begging and fighting for food like….zombies….

I have my “GO BAG” all set up….plenty of engergy bars, water and of course…AMMO for the Zombies!

This has be a topic of extensive debate around my house. I have a n 8th grade son and a 10th grade son. of course my wife doesn’t get it at all but it a great way to cover the issue of dealing with adversity and challenges.
We would like to add that the preferred mode of transport, a Hummer H2.
a crank up radio. lots of bottled water and beef-a -ronie will get you through the worst of it.
The key is find help, set up a team and work together. This is not the time to go it alone. Groups fight zombies better than lone warriors.

For those of you crying that this post is a waste of money, it was definitely a clever way of informing people of emergency preparedness. Do notice the kit mentioned covers many sorts of natural disasters. Plus its a small simple blog post, and the gentleman that wrote it has done a lot of work to help many people. Also let me say, being prepared for the most far fetched scenarios is not a bad policy.

The CDC has long been my favorite governmental agency, but this just makes them even cooler; Next, how about a discussion of the movie Contagion?

Today my friends and I were talking about this and made are plan but not fully no dought we will bring are families with us. My friend Justin is the leader because he knows how to work well twith all of us joen is the guy who has the heavy artilary Richard are medic who knows first aid and can fix our car and drive ect: gervy guns man and I the scout long distance sniper and the guy who knows were to go and how to do it right. But seriously we would stick by this and try to survive if we were trapped one of us would run if the others couldn’t and let them die or help but if they couldn’t they would run and once we turn kill us then they would try to go on I would hope if I turned someone would put me down right there and then ….

I bought some extra cheerios just in case. Who knows, maybe zombies like cheerios.
Jokin aside, this has indeed made me think twice about being prepared, especially since I live in an earthquake zone.

Yes me and my family are prepared we got a nuke cellar with everything in It we got food to last us a year we got water to last us two years we got weapons like guns ,ammo, knives, and blunt weapons.

To all of you, sitting in your shelters, on cans of food, water bottles and batteries:

Relax, enjoy Christmas time and have a happy New Year 2012!

    Same goes to the Zombies…

OMG ppl :’D This is one of the most entertaining public safety discussion’s I have ever seen. Makes me not feel paranoid about having a emergency disaster locker in my house. Thank you CDC and thanks to all the commenters. Good read

Oh and buy the way Brian McGuiness I think the best transportation if the streets are filled with zombie is a Steam roller with and enclosed cab of course. Who cares how fast they are you can clear the streets till the cows come home LoL

wow that was great and now thanks to that we put our own kit together but my three year old son does not under stand why we can not put icecream in our kit.

It is very wise to be cautious and ready at all times. As a first aider, one family should have complete first aid kit and tools. Even if it is not about zombies or perhaps certain calamity being ready is the greatest defense.

This is a serious matter. While the legend of zombies originated in some plantation somewhere in the west indies, I have found that a breakout of rabies is exactly what could cause the zombie apocalypse.

hey zombies are not real no way undead could come to life that is profed by sceintist dead people cant just come alive and start eating brains movie about zombies are fake they use fake blood and the zombies dont eat brains its all fake

Our zombie troops are now moving into the United States. The U.S. army met us at the border but we started launching Snickers at them and we snuck past. Ha! Ha! Ha! Las Vegas here I come!

Getting into holiday spirit I realised we have to correct our attitude toward Zombies.
They are our fallen brothers and sisters. Yes, they misbehave, but maybe because they are beeing misled.
But, I believe, if we only show our good hearts and open ourselves to them, treat them with respect, bestow on them warm feelings, they sure will change their wicked ways. So, let’s welcome them to our houses, let’s stop this silly separation caused by irrational fear, let’s share with them whatever we have. Because this is good. And right.

I foresee the better future, where people and Zombies live together in peace and brotherly love!

” I see dumb people. And they don’t even know they are dumb”. Seriously, this is a pretty amusing way to get people to plan for an unexpected event. Nice concept, CDC. Thanks for the opportunity to learn good tips via humor.

In response to people who think the list from CDC and myself is “excessive” or “unneeded” in the case of a natural disaster not involving “infected” humans/animals, don’t you think the evil people in this country will be looking to lie, steal, and kill to survive at will?
ALSO, I think the CDC should add Nuclear Fallout to the list of “disasters” and should add more items such as gasmasks to the list.
Here’s some more, I forgot a major few

    GAS MASKS

KEVLAR or any type of longsleeve, panted, body armor

HELMETS… any kind would be effective, military helmets, construction, bicycle, and/or motorcycle helmets would be effective.

But of course, when considering my lists you must consider that it will be difficult to carry so many of these items. So it would be wise to either set up an environment with limited vulnarability either your home or elsewhere and store the items there. OR getting THE LEAST HEAVY AND/OR BULKY items.

Having a Bunker or an underground area and GAS MASK will be EXTREMELY important and crucial to survival in case of NUCLEAR FALLOUT

OK. Jerzy, I really think inviting zombies into our homes is a REALLY bad idea. I don’t think it is a separation. Because zombies aren’t real. I DO love the idea that zombies were used as an example in the making of this blog. I love it. Thanks, CDC!

I am very glad to visit this type of knowledge increasing post. Thanks for this great job.

None of us would know what zombies were if the walking dead came out zombies are not real all you geeks just face it it is not going to happen

Cool story. Seriously, this is a pretty amusing way to get people to plan for an unexpected event. Nice concept…

seriously if this did happen i highly doubt that the “CDC would provide technical assistance to cities, states, or international partners dealing with a zombie infestation”. The only thing i could see happening during this would be mass chaos, and people storming there local food stores such as walmart, Big K, dollar general, and other stores that have stuff people could loot, but thats my opinion.

all my friends say zombies are not real but they wont be laughing at me for being a believer during the apocalypse i will be prepared and they will lose

Remember rules of zombieland. But i watch alot of zombie movies. And shut up!!(if you dont want to get eaten)

im ready i live with my mom And Sister im 13 and a big hunter. i have water medical supplies etc.

This is one very clever article making the vast majority of people prepare for the so called Zombie Apocolypse while really preparing them for any situation. Well done to the Author!!!

Its always amusing to read these things…. First, this isnt a waste of tax dollars…. the CDC has taken real info and put it into an arcticle that anyone will read. Secondly look at some of the science the mid European nations are working with…. Re-animation of dead tissue and cells are something they (and im sure we) have been working with. Far fetched…. yes, impossable….. no.

this is so awsome make you aware that when you’re planning for the zombie attack it can also be for other disasters. though when you look at the other comments why are some of you think that this page actually cost anything for one and two its a popular way to get people in today’s socity to actually think of real emergency whether or not it comes in the form of zombies. people need to actually look between the lines before jumping down CDC back this is a clever and inventive idea to get people like me to be aware of emergencys aren’t just preparing for zombies it covers everything :) thank you CDC you guys are amazingly clever makes me have hope for government yet.

LMAO…..I really cannot believe that some of you really think we are talking about Zombies here….WOW…that’s all I can say! Take it for what it is, just a good article about emergency preparedness.

I might be seventeen but I’m prepared for it. My mom always asks me why do I want swords and crossbows and obsessed with guns. I just told her why she doesn’t think it will happen but me and a few buddy’s believe it will. We want to join the CDC task force email me to talk more about it. dbro2012@aol.com

all the people who think the zombies are nonsence will be the first to go! nice to know us prepared ones will live longer because while the nonbelievers are being feasted on the rest of us will be high-tailing it to safety and all ill say to those people who thought this whole thing was crap is TOLD YA SUCKAS!!!! hahaha

Don’t you wish the world were this interested in AIDS or child abuse?
Why are there no shirts for fat dudes? we need sizes 3 and 4x. I know the first rule in survival is cardio but if we gone die we can atleast looks good doing it with our size 4x cdc shirt!! E me if I can get one in this size….i’ll pay extra.

Interesting… a smart way to spread the word of making a disaster preparedness kit using a pop-culture theme.

Well played CDC! Also for some people who might have not evaluated this article clearly it uses a Zombie Apocalypse as a theme to get people thinking of making a disaster kit whether for a Zombie Apocalypse or a Natural Disaster, and I highly doubt this article was made “wasting” taxpayers money, don’t you see? what better way to (what I said earlier at the top of my post). Regardless of what the theme is the message is clear (or so it should be) to be prepared for any type of emergency situation (i.e. fire, natural disasters, town/city evacuation, etc.) that may strike at any moment.

Personally anyone at the CDC could have made this article for fun while still having a purpose, to send a message, besides I doubt this article took much effort to publish or any money in that case. Anyone, if they have the ability to, can post an article in their website having done some research on what they are talking about. I myself made a 6 page research paper on how Bank Bailouts may be good strategy to stabilize an economy artificially in about 5 hrs. Though anyone with basic knowledge about Zombies can create an article encouraging people to be prepared for an emergency of any type using a Zombies Apocalypse as a theme.

Notice that there are some clues that the CDC understands that a Zombie Apocalypse is very unlikely-“and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.” “Well, we’re here to answer that question for you, and hopefully share a few tips about preparing for real emergencies too!” “This includes where you would go and who you would call if zombies started appearing outside your door step. You can also implement this plan if there is a flood, earthquake, or other emergency.”(CDC)-on my post it may not appear in italics
but if you were to review the article you will see that the word “real” is in italics stating once again, that a Zombie Apocalypse is very unlikely. About the third quote, the author uses the situation in which how people should react or do in a Zombie invasion around your house or community because those same strategies can be applied to more common disasters or emergencies. For example: you would call a neighbor or a friend if Zombies were surrounding your house and you are trapped inside, right? This type of action can be applied to you say if you were trapped in a building that was on fire or that had collapsed from an earthquake.

So, if I may say, the CDC has created an article relating to events during a Zombie Apocalypse to real life emergencies to send a message to the public (in this case, believers and the younger population or just about anyone who would rather be prepared anyway) to be prepared!

Where can I find Zombie Proof Ammo cans? I want to store some items and keep them safe for Zombies. I may use it to keep my GO KIT.

The opening line is clearly implying that this is a matter of “when” not a hypothetical “if”. Look: “You may laugh now, but ….” when it happens not if. CDC the disease control guys are saying when not if..isn’t that kinda scary guys?

I’m going to laugh so hard when all the people who say this is a waste of tax money are all infected by this

what if they figured out a way to make a stronger sting of Toxoplasmosa gondii with makes rats zombies. i mean look they use rats to test or meds on already and so there got to be some link that could make it happen. read 5 reasons why it could happen.

This is some very useful information indeed. There is no reason as to why a zombie apocalypse could never happen. With all these new diseases (I’m sure there are plenty more out in the world that are yet to be discovered), ones such as toxoplasmosis and lab experiments, I’m sure there’s a possibility some type of virus could spread causing a zombie, if not a zombie-like, apocalypse of some sort.

i dont have to worry about any cardio im a boxer and a big zombie fan so i keep myself fit even though i understand that the real reason they did this for any emergancy im still making some kind of kit just in case

P.S that kit seems a bit heavy and i think youd be better off travelling light wouldnt you? but keep essentials + dont go to a refugee camp during an apocalypse thatts the most stupid thing you could do but do go if natural disaster of course
    i enjoyed the article

Has anyone made the correlation between what “zombies” act like, to what starving people will be like after a couple weeks without food?
Stock up and prepare now, before the hoards of so-called “zombies” come out of the cities.

i highly doubt there is a due date on when the zombie apocalypse will occor but one thing i know its that you will need better help than just the information that the CDC has provided. you will need survival strategies like simpily how to start a fire or how to make a shelter. if you want to really know how to survive a zombie apocalypse read the book zombie survival guide.

wow……a government website says to prepair for zombies!!!!!!!¡!!!!!!! I knew it would happen I just need to finish our plan C.!!!!!!!!!!

David said that the CDC didn’t have a plan against zombies an the i showed him this and he was like “Wow dylan you were right and I (david) was wronge just like wen you said if a zombie bit u u cant just cut ofthe afflicted area and i disagreed with you even thou u were right.”

You completed some good points on blogs.cdc.gov . I did a search on the theme and found the majority of persons will have the same opinion with your blog.

do you guys really think the zombie apocalypse is going to happen and i thank you for getting us prepared i have a lot of questions that need answering and one of them is….is there going to be a cure cause if not get to cracken cause i dont want this to happen to my family but if there is look up a girl named Priscilla Marie Heflin shes from edmond oklahoma and i want her to be with me when you guys evacuate the country lol but anyway thanks for the heads up

    If you’re boy or even a tom-b.,
Aim you 12-gager right at the Zombie.
But before carelessly you pull carbine’s trigger,
Think! Without them our world will be meager…

    They do have their special deadly charm;
So what that they may miss a leg or an arm,
Or some flesh here or perhaps there…
It’s what’s inside, as far as I care.

Let’s play the music, small band or big,
I’m into romantic Zombie cheek to cheek!
Let’ start our madness, let’s start dans macabre!
Here I am, take my hand ma’am cadav’r!

Around in circles, we’ll conquer the floor!
    Spewing everywhere your mortal odour!

At last music stops… And we’ll go to lie down,
You’ll drop your filthy and moldy brown gown,
You’ll sink your teeth into my warm wanting flesh and
Consuming my body, you’ll put romance to end.

I think zombies may be a little out there on the horizon, but a completely engineered level 4 containment type outbreak would be more plausible into the the forseeable future. If an experiment went wrong and somehow the containgent got airbourne and started infecting humans, we would have some serious issues. Any kind of level 4 episode should not be even considered, because it would cause so much widespread controversy. I have a saying that should be followed by everyone, “Hope For The Best, Prepare For Worst”.

I am pretty sure I saw a group of zombies – they are running around Florida pretending to be Presidential candidates!

Should the more affluent help the less affluent? Do you believe in what Peter Singer does..that we should spend that $500 on charitable causes instead of a new Apple Iphone? Or would a better solution…be something like microlending? What is your position on the moral responsibility of each of us to end world poverty?.

Been reading this blog for awhile but i have been lazy to drop a comment and say thanks. That ends these days: Thanks mate!

This is so awsome….i’ve been preaching preparedness for nearly 30 years and i’m also a zombie movie fan. It’s good to know that people smarter than me have seen the merit of preparing for the worst possible disaster scenario that i can think of, other than utter world destruction, zombies and putting it to practical use. I mean think about it….if you prepare for the worst then when something does happen and it’s not zombies….then it prolly won’t seem so bad

AWWWWWWW YEAAAAAAAAA!!! I so expected the CDC to have something like this on their sight. LOL @(^_^)@

i have a plan tht will work well in my opinion….. and CDC didnt do anything. i just want to know what other people are doing.

well i am making a zombie survival guide for what to do in this type of emergency. ther are 9 categories…
    rules
    where/how you should live
    types of clothes
who should be in your group
where you should and shouldn’t be
    did you spot a zombie?
    weapons?
type of car and what you should do in any building
    And Finally…
    your diet
so that is all i have to show you for now… bye! 😀

OMG! If this ever happens I will totally do that. And here I am just hopping I turn in to Alice like in the Resident Evil movies.

I already discussed this with friends of mine,

we’re going to hide out in our local supply store, where the food and clothes and medical advice is,
at the same time, we’re going to make some sort of tunnel leading to the garden supply store across the road, “there’s drills, saws, chainsaws!” So, there’s our weapons :>

Another thing, if it was a deadly virus, the infection would only last a few days before you’ll be completely dead anyway, the infection would’ve killed you.

    so, OVERALL.
go to a local store, and camp out there, build barriers and just wait until they’re all dead.

There are lots of hypotheses concerning the spirit. The gender chart, where did it come, and also can it pass away i have listed a few of the questions being questioned when i view it, your …

if the zombies are real then kill me now because im terifide this is not a joke put me out of my misery!

the CDC isnt saying zombies are real, theyre using the title to attract sci-fi lovers to stop watching the walking dead and prepare for natural disasters

oh my god this is so cool all my friends think there is no such thing as zombies but i know there out there or coming some day i will make that kit very soon

Here is a thought to the non-believers. They found a fungus that turns ants into zombies, so people turning into zombies could be possible. If and when it happens it could be man-made, or even something nature cooked up. Just think about it…

Some posts are just mean’t to be commented on, this is 1. Thank you for an superb read, so hard to discover nowadays.

What people don’t seem to understand is the CDC’s job is to be prepared and help others prepare for the worst. It’s not wasting money, people are entertained by Zombies and most people are interested. This is a great way to spread the word about being prepared, as stated in the article, if you are prepared for a zombie apocalypse then you are prepared for anything. This is no different then what teachers do in classes, they find an interest point and make it apply to the lesson. I think this is a great way to get people to prepare, and be ready for anything. Thank you for sharing this information, I hope it gets through to people. And for everyone who thinks they are going to hide out in a store, good luck keeping it secure because you will have to fight more people then zombies. Everyone has the same ideas, those ideas will get you killed. Think outside the box, and think every detail through.

i guess some of these people really are not getting the complete point of all this zombie talk. all it is for is to attract the attention of different groups of people to teach them how to be prepared for anything that could happen on a local or a global level so why dont some of you people lighten up on the freakin sny comment you have no clue what your talking about. if youve read anything about the preparedness for disaster an have a half of a brain you would relize that this is a good artical to read. and for all of those that get it an understand this artical good for youll be the ones too survive

Zombies? Is that what we are calling the looters and have nots? How compassionate that we must refer to the realities of an emergency as an attack from zombies. We have zombies for a presidential administration, be prepared to defend yourself from the current zombies in our presence, the folks with their hands out.

Hello there, just turned into aware of your weblog thru Google, and found that it’s truly informative. I’m gonna watch out for brussels. I’ll appreciate if you happen to proceed this in future. A lot of folks will probably be benefited out of your writing. Cheers!

I agree with the CDC using zombies or a so called “zombie apocalypse” to attract the attention of the otherwise uncaring people who don’t pay attention to what can actually happen and then when it does they are crying to others and begging for handouts because they weren’t smart enough to actually think for a change and always be prepared. This stuff isn’t rocket science. Things happen all the time and it’s these idiots that are all happy and saying i knew a zombie apocalypse was coming that are going to be the ones with no family, no home, no resources and left to die on the street because the rest of us are smarter. If you actually believe that this is really about zombies then you really should look in the mirror and perform a reality check and get your priorities in order.

I used o be scared but now I am semi ready because all of the beef jerky and venison will be free. I am still scared but I am pretty thrilled for a 12 year old.

This is awesome. lol I always liked the conecpt of zombies, though I think I won’t survive if this ever happens. Too many people where I live.

The zombie apocalypse may or may not be real, however the site does draw attention to general emergency preparedness by using the zombie as one such emergency. Though zombies may not be real, there are real emergencies that should be taken into consideration by all citizens and making this site is a good way to put some “fun” into a serious scenario. I got my kit packed….

I always wondered, where do I go in a Zombie Apocalypse?! I mean, its not like I don’t have a good Idea, and I know where to avoid, but where do you go? Let’s say you have a safehouse(just the place your at, maybe a few people), and there are zombies outside, but your safe and have a good amount of supplies. Don’t you always have a plan to go to a final safe zone, like zombie-free. In other words. Ok, just because am safe now, in this place, doesn’t mean I wanna be here for ever, like where can I move on to as my ultimate goal, a safer place. For one, I live in South Florida, so I’ll tell you, you dead if you don’t have a boat. Ok, there’s Miami, and Ft. Lauterdale, but what about the majority of people living in suburbs a few miles farther inland. For thoughts of you who don’t understand, go to google maps, and look at the satellite image of the east coast of south Florida and that huge mesh of city after city, is what am talking about. Oh, and I live in Coral Springs (if you don’t know where it is, type it in on google maps), so am surrounded to the east and south by suburbs, and after that, cities. To the west, Big Cypress National park, basically the Everglades, litteray on the western city limits. North, north’s a smaller town, called park land and after that, guess what more suburbs and big cypress! Wow, I feel surrounded, so this is why I ask, were do I go? There’s two highways out of south Florida, I-95 on the east coast(not an option) and one called the Tami-ami trail, which goes from Miami to western south Florida, or in otherwords, Another city! I really hope I get good suggestions, and please don’t say “go to cuba…”. Great an Island full of refugees(soon to be zombies) from Florida.

    To Christian,

Take a glider boat and disappear into Everglades. But not before you let Zombies sense where you’re retreating. They’ll go after you and, hopefully, will end up as gators’ fodder.

    I think it’s exellent plan.

I agree with some of the lower comments but you should always carry a flash light. Also you shouldent camp in small places because you might be cornered. Always carry a small thing of value and extra money incase of a run-in with somemore “surviors” or to bribe with.Avoid these places: Hosbitals, malls, super markets and Contact with other people. Good Blog though!

If there truly is going to b a zombie apocalypse, everyone will panic. Its best to avoid crowded areas and be ready to kill, mentality is a huge part of survival. Be ready at home, in the car and on the go, always have a plan a, b, and c. I’m only 16 and i’m already prepared for any disaster to hit California, after all any disaster kit can also be used for a zombie apocalypse kit. Also DONT FORGET TO WATCH EACH OTHERS BACKS, many times someone will mess up on any important job, even in modern warfare people still mess up. Ba alert at all times, trade off keeping watch at night and help each other out. Setting up a small trustworthy community of people who are local to your area is also a good idea, but make sure they are trustworthy and share similar goals and interests as you. Tell the wrong person what you have prepared could make you a target for a raid.

All this coming from the same clowns that were unable to prevent the swine flu from spreading the way it did, the delays in the vaccine etc.
If this ever happened the world would be doomed!!
    The CDC is a joke.

ok so like if there really is going to be a zombie apocalypse which i don’t belive is going to happen but just in case i’ll be ready for them. Most of these dumb people out there think that if zombies suddenly appear that they should go protect their loved ones. well thats mistake #1. And also even if ya’ll say that theres going to be a zombie apocalypse that doesnt mean that theres gonna be one. Try to understand that ther will NEVER be a zombie apocalypse.

When I read this article…makes me think of zombies = cannabals. Crisis sets in and people go hungry and starve..they become cannabals to survive. Something to think about..this Zombie Apocalypse!!!

    Watch out, people!

There is a Zombie plant inside CDC! They are the ones doing so called “moderation”. You know what that mean, do you? They are comiiing…

    @ Aislinn

Well, zombies doesn’t necessarily mean the undead coming out of their grave to eat your brains. There is A LOT of biological warfare going on behind closed doors. What leaks out to the public is just a glimpse of whats really going on. And besides this biological warfare, flu’s and infections are being messed with everyday. Recently the bird flu. There was an article about that being contaminated with something and turning into a deadly virus. They are one deadly virus away from creating that virus that will turn humans into something like zombies. So if some people do not believe that the “Zombie” apocalypse is going to happen, lets start calling it a virus outbreak. Cuz that’s exactly what it will be, WHEN it happens.

First of all, I would like to thank the CDC for acknowledging that a Zombie Apocalypse is a definite possibility and needs to be treated as a potential threat. Although a zombie outbreak is highly unlikely, it’s still possible. ANYONE who thinks that a lethal super virus is impossible is a complete moron. It IS 100% possible and everyone should be prepared for such an event. With that being said, thank you CDC for getting people involved and prepared for a pandemic in a fun and entertaining way. CDC, you get an A+. 😀

How can you make a cure for something that not real or happen yet? What are they hiding……

Well done, CDC. I’m a University Emergency Preparedness Officer, and the Zombie Task Force will be a great way to “sell” Emergency Preparedness on campus… BZ!

i seen a zombie please be aware i dont see any more if you see them then call at 4804959281 ill tell you a safe place LAY LOW dont cry turn off lights and cover windows

Awesome! Glad CDC acknowledged this. I know most people think zombies are a joke, but experimentation with viruses DOES happen. You never know, you’re little town could be the next Raccoon City and we could all be living the real “Walking Dead.” The world is becoming more advanced; anything can happen…

Another idea is to go somewhere icy 24/7; the low temperatures will deteriorate/freeze the bodies making them slower and less able to get around.

I’m all about “doomsday prepping,” but this is a joke. Our Gov’t has nothing better to spend our tax dollars on?

Absolutely well done. You made emergency awareness fun. I never really focused on being prepared for the unexpected and now I am kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
Now let me count the number of people who complained that you are “wasting funds” because they don’t have a clue what your true intentions were.

ene my ne mo catch a zombie by the toe if he bites let him go e ne my ne mo. Just never ‘”hold back on a zombie attack”,. if you love them dont decide not to kill him or her they’re already dead, and their in a better place so no matter what dont hold back. you may cry you lost a loved one, but you survied 1 more second.

I’ve been in a few disasters and war zones, so my patients depend on me when there is a weather alert. I’m the “go to girl” for disaster preparedness. Everyone will be happy to know that we will have a zombie preparedness plan as well as hurricane, blizzard and tornado.

you never know whats going to happen anythings possible but in a lot of movies the cdc will close off the infected area so no one could get out even if your not infected and they just destroyed the whole place killing everyone so the infection wouldnt spread do you think they might do that if there was a zombie apocalypse?

make plan A.(don’t get bitten, kill the infected, don’t make friends with strangers) and B.(don’t break plan A)

this is a joking thing about the zombie apocalypse but it is getting sane people attention about the coming economic collapse. prepare for a year to 2 years of nothing much on store shelves while the USA gets back on its feet, the “zombies” u will first have to dispose of are the people that did not prepare , coming in large groups to steal the food and water and armament you have stored up. after that the feds will be coming to do the same in the name of “government protecion of the people”, but will do the same thing and cart you and yours to interrment camps ie: FEMA camps the CDC is trying to get you to prepare for it. nuff said ?

Anyone who believes in zombies has nothing to worry about, you have no brains to begin with! Start spending more time trying to solve REAL problems.

I think this blog post is inappropriate. It terrified a special needs 6th grader in my class who really has himself convinced that a zombie apocalypse is going to happen today. I taught him in a study skills class on how to identify reliable sources on the internet that .gov websites can generally be trusted.

I get the joke, and the purpose of the post. However, not everyone does. The fact that this is a joke should be more explicit on a CDC website.

A zombie Apocalypse!!! WOW! Now I know why there are so much stupidity in the World! Mankind has been around for centuries and never has there been Zombies but all of a sudden it is just going to happen! You people need to get a LIFE! Instead of waiting for DEATH! So yeah let’s stock up enough food and water for a few days…. and then what oh Yeah we can live minute to minute like the characters on “The Walking Dead” waiting for the moment we will be eaten by Zombies. Who in their right mind would want to suvivve so they can spend the rest of their lives killing Zombies! That is messed up!

good site!! You should start many more. I love all the info offered. I will stay tuned.

Face it, prepared or not in any situation idiots loose. I feel like I’m around zombies all day. Justin beber is googled more than world events that matter, and people can’t even remember a phone number with out a cell phone, I’m sorry CDC, your scare tactic to inform the great citizens of our Country, and act like you care probly won’t go far. Besides I could think of a dozen things off the top of my head that would make your “prepaired kit” look like a gift bag from toys “r” us

but the main reason for zombie attack might be something els also right ?
    well you cant know
but the only one thing that you should do in a zombie attack is that save you and only your self that is the best thing i think

this is BS thier is no freakin zombies who are going to attack us. Shut the heck up about it pretty please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thier is no such thing as zombies who are going to attack us. You just wait and see. I hope you all look back at this and laugh that you actually belived this.

First of all I would like to say awesome blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Thanks!

Zombies made significant inroads in the society already. Especially in places like Frisco, West Hollywood in Los Angeles, New Orleans, San Antonio Texas, New York and other big cities. We, still unaffected, must increase our efforts to resist them and stop their invasion.

Remember, there are more of us!

If a zombie apocalypse will occur, then why are kids still being taught knowledge that will be rendered obsolete?

Hi my friend! I wish to say that this post is awesome, nice written and include approximately all important infos. I would like to look extra posts like this .

of course like your web site however you need to check the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I in finding it very troublesome to tell the reality however I will certainly come back again.

Thank you for another wonderful post. Where else could anyone get that kind of information in such a perfect method of writing? I have a presentation next week, and I am at the look for such info.

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, MOVE TO THE COUNTRYSIDE! IT’S THE ONLY PLACE THAT WON’T GET NUKED!!!!!

Perhaps the presence of prions in the human genome will contaminate the zombie food supply! So, as Monte Python sings, “Always look on the bright side of life” there may be an up-side to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease!

This is a Government Website. They’re not just doing this just to get other people prepared.

Do you understand how serious the CDC really is?

They know something we don’t.. com’n you and I both know the gov’t doesn’t tell us everything..

Africa is having some disease called the ‘nodding disease’ almost zombie like people wanting to bite and start fires. The CDC and WHO is over their. They can’t find a cure or a cause of the problem.

Maybe this is they’re way of sending out the signal? and think about this.. you’re like

“ZOMBIE APOC??? CDC POSTED THIS?? IM GOING TO TELL MY FRIENDS!!@!@ :D:P:)”

    ^^^

That is exactly! what they want you to do.. spread the word.. its so out there that people will just want to spread the word and get prepared.

    CDC knows something
    Gov’t knows something

    be smart.
    get prepared.

I was suggested this website by way of my cousin. I’m now not sure whether or not this submit is written via him as no one else recognize such special about my problem. You are amazing! Thanks!

Magnificent points altogether, you simply received a new reader. What may you suggest in regards to your post that you simply made some days ago? Any sure?

Hello There. I discovered your weblog the use of msn. This is a very well written article. I’ll be sure to bookmark it and come back to learn more of your helpful info. Thanks for the post. I’ll definitely comeback.

I cherished as much as you’ll receive performed proper here. The cartoon is tasteful, your authored subject matter stylish. nonetheless, you command get got an nervousness over that you wish be turning in the following. ill no doubt come further before once more as precisely the same nearly a lot incessantly inside case you shield this increase.

Seriously? There are actually people who believe this crap exists, and now a credible source posts emergency strategies about it? This may seem funny, but it’s a huge disappointment. Unfortunately, natural disasters may not seem ‘cool’, but that doesn’t give anyone the right to exploit public media to attract an audience.

Tell young people what is important. Teach them what matters and how they can protect themselves and their families. Don’t confirm to popular media to gain attention, you’ll lose respect on the process.

I just couldn’t leave your site before suggesting that I extremely enjoyed the standard information a person provide in your visitors? Is gonna be again often in order to check up on new posts

hey…. zombies aren’t real. You are just a bunch a fag virgins who live with their parents! btw you guys will be locked in you basement thinking theres a zombie attack, and you will end up having sex with your friend.

I am making a bunker at my house now with my friends Jon, Zack, Jocob, Brandon, Kyle, Austin, Autin again and etc. Thank you CDC!!!….

hello, I´m from argentina and I don´t speak good english. I wonder if in the coming years or now be zombie pandemic begins. Thank you for the information. It´s very interesting!

This was really helpful! I’m using some of the information for a story I’m writing, and it’s looking better now!

people, the only food material that would last until you decide its time to munch the rest of it away, is honey. honey never goes bad or “expires” so it is the ideal food for an emergency kit. put a few bottles of that, a few mags, a battery radio/flashlight, and water in there and your set for eternity, or til you die.

all you need is food/ water/ / a good car/ gas/ gas masks (oh and also a shelter. (: peferbly away from gravyards and poupilated areas! oh and please zombies are transmitted by mad cow dieseace well get ready to fight! oh and if your beat or you got bitting your dead just kill yourself ! now back to the comments/.

Why would the CDC be ready for a zombie apacalypse??? They know that something could happen and they are the ones that are going to release the virus.

I dont see how people can laugh this off as a joke!!!!!
With all the weird disease’s in the world and the crazy people messing with reanamation of dogs
And the plain and scary murdering crazy people in the world. Not to forget all the countries that
Hate america, and our way of life. Yeah i dout we will have people yelling brains and eating our brains lol
But toxicins induced into the body that could make a person go absolute crazy or mad. Kind of like someone
On PCP Unresponsive Crazy Super Strong.
If you go by all zombie movies made Its always was cause by virus, chemical, radiation, and parasites
If the CDC says to look out just in case. I dont think they would joke about something on the National level
“”””people climb on top of your house and let the sniping begin””””””””

i think people should take precautions during the apocalypse like “what if they run, of what if they can’t see?” i think we should try those out

Well it seems a lot of people think this is just unlikely….
Take a moment and think about everyone that did not think about mad cow disease, Black Plague, Bird Flu, should I go on? WHY is this not probable and unlikely? It is better to be prepared than to not be. I myself have dreams about this., but yet I have had a few dreams about UFO’s. when we know they exist EVEN if we did not actually see one. You should prepare for “what could happen” instead of This is UNLIKELY!!!

The CDC is doing this as a plausible “case” AND IMO would be better to be prepared for a case that is possible.
Do you go to the store and by food for a week or more? What about other house hold items? IF past Civilations and history have taught us anything it would to be prepared for the “unlikely”

I love this article. It grabs the attention of many people and educates them on the importance of emergency preparedness. Fo those who think that the cdc wasted tax payers money, i disagree. This is a fun way to educated people and the overall message is valid.

Let’s not forget diplomacy skills when dealing with zombies. Don’t leave this valuable tool out of your “emergency kit”. Let’s try and reason and negotiate with the zombies. Convince them your brains do not contain the necessary social, religious and political neuro-transmitters they crave. But if that fails and violence is your last option, be careful, because if you shoot too many of the same “color” zombies, your fellow survivors will probably cast you out for being a racist! If you don’t have a gun in your kit (The CDC deemed them un-necessary) then just throw cans of cream of mushroom soup. Make sure you hit them in the head.

The Zombies do not bother me ! I am do not like the werewolves . You might be able to blend in with Zombies but you will have to grow a lot of hair to blend in with the werewolves !

What the heck happened to the Apocalypse 101 video that came out last May or so? I can’t find it anywhere and was wanting to show my kids.

@arlaw #79, and all the other morons posting about wasted taxpayer money, and the stupidity of this campaign. I work for the government, and have seen taxpayer money wasted first hand, this is not one of those cases. Clearly you can not appreciate the humor in this awareness campaign, or in everyday life I would guess. I would hate to know you, such a boring life you must have if you can’t find the value and humor in something such as this. Many people under 30 have never even thought about emergency preparedness, until The CDC posted this. I guarantee this has made thousands of people think about preparing for real life emergency, and it has managed to do it in a very clever way. I am guessing the CDC was not trying to reach people like you, but more the younger people, with a sense of humor, that maybe could use a lesson on the topic. You guys criticizing are really just complaining to complain, is your life so boring that you track down things that are not geared towards you, just so you can post a comment whining about it? (The answer is yes btw)

When the apocalypse begins and the CDC “helpers” arrive, how will I tell the difference between the Zombies and the “helpers”?

Honestly, I havet started preparing but researching movies I have noticed a very important pattern that I believe everyone should know. Haven’t you noticed that while everyone I running the news has not stopped running in the movies. This gives me a feeling that one of the safest places to go for a while would be a radio station. Plus learning Martial arts Is quite handy and learning how to handle a gun. Paintball Is good practice.

“Make a list of local contacts like the police, fire department, and your local zombie response team.” That’s hilarious. Good article though. It really opens the eye to the possibility of a zombie apocalypse and how to deal with it.

to all that are complaing about tax dollars being spent this is a way for CDC to come across a younger group to realize theres other issues to be aware of as if you didnt notice in this blog they said hurricanes floods, etc… when a person googles zombies this shows and it catches their eye they read and thats what they want you to do!!!!!!!!! its a great idea because i read it

Wow are you serious, thew cdc posts this up. it has to be serious. Dont be surprise when DEC 21,2012 hit and and people are outside eating people. SMH I think ima start preparing lol.

I think it’s great what the CDC has. Not only have they informed us on fictional doom, but actual doom as well. Although I can’t completly deny the existence of Zombies because ANYTHING is possible. This is a great way to help everyone prepare for any kind of natrual disaster.

But I’d like to enlighten you all on the “12-21-12″ that the accient people who created the calender did not count leap years.. etc.. I believe we’ve had like 500 and something leapyears.. therefore the world would have ended like 8 or 9 months ago. Google it and prove me right. If a zombie apoclypse happens it won’t be this year;) Wonderful days breh <READ THAT;)

Yeah, its better to be prepared than sorry. Thanks for the tips just to be ready in case this will really happen. I feel strongly about it and I take pleasure in learning about this topic.

Finnaly! My friends think I’m crazy since I’m always prepared for the apocalypse! I never thought the CDC was prepared!!! Thanks CDC! But in the movie Quarantine the building was put under quarantine and they said everything is gonna be okay but they just left them there to die… But life isn’t a movie so CDC IS HERE TO HELP!

“A “zombie apocalypse?” Is this for real? My tax dollars funding CDC nonsense? What’s next, Preparedness 102 – Mall Ninja’s Unite? Give me a break.”
LOL! Some of you are thick, this article is all about how to prepare for ANY disaster. Its quite a brilliant and effective move if you think about it.

how is a zombie apocalypse funny it is a serious problem. And thank you CDC i am now perparing a kit and a plan if this becomes a problem in the future

i know some guys who are a pretty frigin awsome when it comes to stuff like surviving a zombie apocalypse. some one should invent a sign that you can put up on a building to let people now your ok. That way people can work together to survive. i just have to say that the CDC better invent a cure if a zombie apocalpse really did happen

Lmao; this is pretty much a waste of time, Zombies are not real.. If they where, you’d see me hiding in a tree.
I often used to freak out when i first heard about this “Zombie Apocalypse” but get real, As much as your freaky, geeked up, stupid, xbox playing minds want to believe it is true. It is sadly not.
Sorry to break the terrible news.
    Have more sense you guys!!

im completely ready for this but i still dont think its going to happen in my life time

this is so fake there is no way in hell that there would be a zombie apacalips spend your time on somthing more usfull

You no at first its not the zombies you need to worry about its the guys in uniform shooting anything moving NOT wearing a uniform. 😀 But in my opinion everyone shold head south and find you a nice small island :)

Ruslan Steininger “this is so fake there is no way in hell that there would be a zombie apacalips spend your time on somthing more usfull”
@ Ruslan ……like learning how to spell and punctuate properly

Thank you CDC for re-contextualizing important information with a little humor. As it turns out, these supplies you suggest, yeah, they’re just a good idea anyway. I appreciate this use of my money.

The people who are claiming this will never happen and making fun of people because “zombies aren’t real” are really sorta missing the point and are mostly on their way to being zombies anyway, not to mention highly ignorant of the things the government spends money on already.

How much tax money is being wasted trying to force personal choices out of our society. I’m betting these are the sorts of people who totally feel that’s money well spent. I’m betting the expense to discover if a baseball player used steroids resulted in more expense than this campaign has.

I will be happy to fall back to my “amusing zombie survival kit” when something else happens. Water is water… it’s not like I would be reserving it just for a zombie apocalypse. “Oh no, this is a terrorist attack, we can’t use those cans of food until there are zombies”.

    Think… for goodness sake
