Health Marketing Musings is the official blog of the Director of the National Center for Health Marketing (NCHM) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The mission of the National Center for Health Marketing (NCHM) is to protect and promote the public’s health through collaborative and innovative health marketing programs, products, and services that are customer-centered, science-based, and high-impact. This blog addresses those topics through posts about different issues related to research, science, and practice in health marketing, health communication, social marketing, information technology, public health partnerships, and other related issues. Dr. Jay M. Bernhardt

Dr. Jay Bernhardt is the Director of the National Center for Health Marketing (NCHM) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). NCHM specializes in health marketing programs and services that are high-impact, science-based, and customer-centered. Some of the Center’s signature programs include CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, CDC’s Emergency Communication System, the Guide to Community Preventive Services, the Tom Harkin Global Communications Center, oversight of www.CDC.gov, and coordination of CDC’s public and private partnerships.

Dr. Bernhardt is deeply involved with public health leadership at the national, state, and local level, and recently served as Vice Chairperson of the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association. He has served as Associate Editor of Health Education Research and an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Health Communication.

Before joining the CDC in August 2005, Dr. Bernhardt was an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences and Health Education at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and the Founding Director of the Emory Center for Public Health Communication. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor of Health Promotion and Behavior at the University of Georgia. Dr. Bernhardt’s research and instruction have focused on health communication, social marketing, and media, with an emphasis on information technology, e-health, and strategic communication. He has published more than 30 articles in scholarly journals including the American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Health Communication, and the British Medical Journal.

Dr. Bernhardt received his BA from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. He received his Master of Public Health degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and his Doctorate from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
